The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has raised concerns over what it describes as attempts by some individuals and organizations to disenfranchise some Ghanaians in the 2016 general elections.

A statement signed by Communications Director of the party, Nana Akomeah alleged that some persons are being asked to present their voters’ ID cards in return for promised services.

[contextly_sidebar id=”Wb7znPHEfHCClUsmA5OFO6sLNzoH9d3O”]According to the statement, some unpaid nurses have been assured that payment will be facilitated upon tendering in their voters ID.

Also, farmers in the Ashanti, Eastern and Western regions are being requested to submit their voters ID cards before being registered for fertilizer allocation.

Meanwhile some market women are also being promised loans only when they submit their Voters’ ID cards; while voters in Cape Coast are being asked to submit their cards for safe keeping in other to secure their re-registration.

The statement further alleged that some individuals in Accra were offered GH¢50 in return for submitting their ID cards.

The statement also indicated that in all such reported instances, information on the Voters’ I.D card is copied or the cards are not returned at all.

The NPP said it is “at a loss as to why voters ID cards of innocent Ghanaians are demanded before a public service is rendered to them.”

The party is therefore urging people to refuse any request from any quarters to submit their Voters ID cards in the absence of any tangible explanation.

The NPP strongly advice voters that they may be disenfranchised or lose the right to vote if they give out their ID cards.
