An Ivorian journalist, Joseph Gnahoua Titi,\u00a0is standing trial in Abidjan for writing an article about the wealth of the\u00a0Ivorian President Alassanne Ouattara<\/p>\n
On July 31, 2015, Joseph Gnahoua Titi, managing editor of the Aujourd’hui newspaper, appeared before an examining magistrate in Cote d\u2019Ivoire for \u201cdisseminating false information” and \u201clibel against the head of state.\u201d<\/p>\n
[contextly_sidebar id=”qjQrB3oJuH1hKA8RNf1r0efPHVhaatsm”]Before his arrest and detention at the Abidjan Remand Home and Prison on July 29, Titi was summoned together with his editor-in-chief, S\u00e9verine Bl\u00e9, on July 28.<\/p>\n
The two were summoned to explain a publication in Aujourd’hui. Titi was questioned for nearly five hours.<\/p>\n
The said article, published on July 21 and titled “President Ouattara is extremely rich. His wealth is estimated at 17 billion US dollars,\u201d allegedly \u201cimpugned the integrity\u201d of Ivorian President Alassanne Ouattara.<\/p>\n
During the interrogation, Titi said the article was based on published information made available by France\u2019s external intelligence agency, the General Directorate of External Security (Direction G\u00e9n\u00e9rale de la S\u00e9curit\u00e9 Ext\u00e9rieur-DGSE).<\/p>\n
According to the MFWA\u2019s correspondent in Cote d\u2019Ivoire, the reports from the General Directorate of External Security are unpopular in the country.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese reports from the DGSE are alleged to have impugned the integrity of the Abidjan regime with regard to the violation of the arms embargo, the massive misappropriation of the public purse and electoral fraud,\u201d our correspondent said.<\/p>\n
The MFWA condemns the arrest and detention of Titi. Press offences were decriminalized in C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire in 2004, hence the arrest and detention of Titi violates Ivorian law in addition to Titi\u2019s rights as a journalist.<\/p>\n
