The General Secretary of the United Front Party, Listowell Nana Kusi-Poku has sued the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) for embarking on strike.

He is among other things praying the court to declare the GMA’s strike as “illegal” and further “compelling the defendant to go back to the negotiation table.”

[contextly_sidebar id=”TuteCuXeC5Jb26ghFNVn8C0TyKZk3hqP”]Kusi-Poku is also seeking “a perpetual injunction order compelling the defendant to return to work and to stay at work until the conclusion of negotiations.”

According to a writ dated August 6, and filed at the Labour and industrial division of the Accra High Court states that Kusi-Poku finds the conduct of the GMA as “quite disturbing in view of the crucial role medical doctors play in any nation’s life and wondered if a strike action should not be the last resort especially since it had not heard of any negotiations between the Government or its representatives which had broken down preceding the announcement that the defendant was embarking on a strike action.”

Kusi-Poku fruther stated that “while the defendant is entitled to its demands as far as improvement on existing conditions are concerned same must be done on a gradual basis and the defendant’s employer ought to consider these demands holistically within the context of existing resources available to it so as not to default its implementation in the event that it finally accedes to its demands.”

The GMA declared a partial strike action on July 30, as part of moves to resign en mass from the public service if government fails to provide them with a document stating their conditions of service.

They have threatened to return to work only when their demands are addressed.

But government has urged the leadership of the GMA to call off the strike and return to the negotiation table.

President Mahama has said that he will not succumb to pressures from the doctors to release salaries and allowances that have not been captured in the budget.
