{"id":141024,"date":"2015-08-06T05:47:13","date_gmt":"2015-08-06T05:47:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=141024"},"modified":"2015-08-06T06:07:22","modified_gmt":"2015-08-06T06:07:22","slug":"utag-declares-indefinite-strike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2015\/08\/utag-declares-indefinite-strike\/","title":{"rendered":"UTAG declares indefinite strike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The University Teachers Association of Ghana(UTAG) has declared an indefinite strike over their book and research allowances.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;MXv08CjQbQLa7E7TpALlLlWU0ggzZhBX&#8221;]A statement from the group stated that the decision was taken at a meeting held on Wednesday at the University Of Education, Winneba.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">President of UTAG, Dr. Samuel Ofori Bekoe said government is yet to acknowledge the numerous letters they have written on their 2014\/2015 Book &amp; Research Allowance hence the strike.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He further stated that they will not take part in any academic work until their demands are met.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">UTAG has over the years battled with government over similar demands.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 2014, the association embarked on a five-week strike to compel government to release their book and research allowances.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Government has in recent times been hit with a number of strikes from the public sector.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Teachers and Education Workers Union (TEWU) has also warned government that it may also <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2015\/08\/05\/strike-alert-teachers-union-threatens-industrial-action\/\" target=\"_blank\">embark on a strike<\/a><\/strong><\/span> if issues regarding their conditions of service are not dealt with soon.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The workers claim that the government is deliberately delaying the negotiation process.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2015\/08\/03\/call-off-the-illegal-strike-now-govt-to-doctors\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Doctors<\/strong><\/a>, the Government and Hospital Pharmacists Association (GHOSPA) are currently on strike to demand better working conditions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Meanwhile President John Mahama has reiterated his stance that <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2015\/08\/05\/dead-goat-syndrome-im-determined-no-matter-the-political-cost-mahama-to-doctors\/\" target=\"_blank\">he will not succumb to pressure<\/a><\/strong><\/span> from labour especially as elections approach and that he will not spend outside the budget, as the currently is on an austerity path to save the economy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8211;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">By: citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The University Teachers Association of Ghana(UTAG) has declared an indefinite strike over their book and research allowances.
