The camp of former New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo has stated that flagbearer hopeful, Alan Kyeremanteng can only prove his popularity among Ghanaians if he had run as an independent presidential candidate.

“He has absolutely no way of proving his popularity except if he had run as an independent. That is the truth of the matter unless there is another scientific way he could have proven to us,” said Akufo-Addo’s spokesperson, Mustapha Hamid.

In an interview with Citi News, Mr. Hamid refuted claims that the camp of Nana Addo is urging Alan Kyeremanteng out of the race.

The Alan camp has since interpreted that call to mean Mr. Kyeremanteng is being hound out of the party.

Mustapha Hamid however told Citi News, the conclusions by the Alan camp are misplaced saying, “he [Alan] has 20% of the party and how can anybody hound him out of the party. I am not saying that now he should get out of the party. Who am I?”

According to him, Nana Addo and Mr. Kyeremanteng “have never run together on a national scale to determine what is their percentage of popularity…it is only if he had run as an independent candidate at that time and gotten more votes than Nana.”

Since the NPP delegates elected new national executives last Saturday, attention has sharply shifted towards the flagbearership slot of the party.

There have been back and forth between the camps of the two flagbearer aspirants in relation to who should be allowed to lead the party in the 2016 presidential elections.

But a statement signed by Nana Addo on Thursday urged party members to be calm and stay focused and also cease the inner party bickering.
