{"id":140865,"date":"2015-08-05T13:47:48","date_gmt":"2015-08-05T13:47:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=140865"},"modified":"2015-08-05T13:47:48","modified_gmt":"2015-08-05T13:47:48","slug":"strike-alert-teachers-union-threatens-industrial-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2015\/08\/strike-alert-teachers-union-threatens-industrial-action\/","title":{"rendered":"Strike Alert: Teachers Union threatens industrial action"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Teachers and Education Workers Union (TEWU) has warned government it\u00a0may also embark on a strike if issues regarding their conditions of service are not dealt with soon.<\/p>\n<p>The workers claim that the government is deliberately delaying the negotiation process.<\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;TYp4KwL4k6f9npSADBUAIw3L8hmqFD5L&#8221;]The General Secretary of TEWU, Augustine Kabo, in an interview with <strong>Citi News<\/strong>, lamented over the delays and stated that they were considering embarking on a strike if the situation does not improve.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We don\u2019t think it is fair on us as leadership to sit by and look as our members are being disadvantaged. So we are sounding the alarm bells to Government and to the powers that be. If they have ears, they should hear this in good faith that we are prepared to dialogue with them,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But in the absence of dialogue, and having been waiting patiently for all this while with these matters coming to our members, we cannot continue to sit and wait for dialogue to come on.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The union includes workers from the public tertiary intuitions across the country and is demanding a renewal of their conditions of service which expired five years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The last few months have been a testing period for the government with a number of strikes especially in the health sector.<\/p>\n<p>The Ghana Medical Association announced a strike after the negotiations over their conditions of service broke down.<\/p>\n<p>The Association of State Attorneys also declared a strike in July, demanding improved working conditions.<\/p>\n<p>The attorneys however \u00a0<span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2015\/08\/04\/state-attorneys-call-off-strike\/\" target=\"_blank\">called off their strike<\/a><\/strong><\/span> on Tuesday\u00a0stating that they wanted\u00a0go through the arbitration process to press home their demands.<\/p>\n<p>The psychiatric nurses also called off their <span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #666699;\" href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2015\/08\/04\/psychiatric-nurses-call-off-day-old-strike\/\" target=\"_blank\">day-old strike<\/a><\/strong><\/span> on Tuesday following assurances by the government that they would be paid their salary arrears by September.<\/p>\n<p>The Government and Hospital Pharmacists Association (GHOSPA)\u00a0also declared a strike on Monday\u00a0because of alleged discrepancies on their placement on the Single Spine Salary Structure, after a breakdown in negotiations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>By: Edwin Kwakofi\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Teachers and Education Workers Union (TEWU) has warned government it\u00a0may also embark on a strike if issues regarding their conditions of service are not dealt with soon.
