The Vice-President, Mr Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur, has commended Egypt for successfully constructing another canal.

He made the commendation when the Egyptian Ambassador to Ghana, Mr Mohamed Mostapha Heider, called on him at the Flagstaff House last Thursday.

Egypt has completed the construction of the $8 billion project dubbed Suez Canal Axis, which the government hopes will help boost the country’s economy and aid world trade.

The canal, which will run alongside the existing 145-year-old Suez Canal, will allow more ships to pass through on a given day, reducing waiting time for one of the world’s most important shipping channels.

Egypt has invited President John Dramani Mahama as a special guest to the official opening of the canal on August 6.

Mr Heider was at the Flagstaff House to deliver a letter from the Egyptian Prime Minister, Mr Ibrahim Mehlib, to the Vice-President seeking Ghana’s support for Egypt’s bid for a permanent seat at the United Nations (UN) Security Council.

The letter also talked about the need to strengthen bilateral relations with Ghana.

Vice-President Amissah-Arthur said relations between Ghana and Egypt had improved over the years, adding that the two countries shared a lot of things in common.

He stressed the need for the two countries to continue with their fruitful and mutually beneficial relations and expressed the hope that the relations would continue to grow.

Mr Amissah-Arthur said Ghana was an ideal destination for investment and urged Egypt to take advantage of that.

He also called for increased trade and investment flow between the two countries

Mr Heider said there were many areas in which the two countries could collaborate on a win-win situation.

He said the Egyptian business community had expressed interest in furthering investment in many areas of Ghana.

The envoy stated that the canal would not only benefit Egypt but also Africa and the world at large.
