Nurses of the Accra Psychiatric Hospital have announced they will lay down their tools on\u00a0August 3, 2015.<\/p>\n
The strike is to protest what they say is the Ministry of Health\u2019s refusal to settle their salary arrears.<\/p>\n
The nurses, in a statement indicated that they have been compelled to resort to the strike because of\u00a0the \u201cposition\u201d the Ministry of Health has taken concerning their concerns.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have taken all legitimate and diplomatic steps to resolve this matter amicably in an attempt to avert any unrest but the Ministry of Health has well demonstrated its lack of interest in our case.”<\/p>\n

Their decision comes days after the some junior doctors expressed concerns over the non-payment of their salary<\/a><\/strong><\/span> spanning 11 months.<\/p>\n The doctors subsequently\u00a0picketed at the Controller and Accountant General’s Department to register their displeasure about the problem, before some of them started receiving payment.<\/p>\n Government subsequently declared its intention to settle the arrears by Wednesday but the doctors say only 14 out of the 91 have so far been paid.<\/p>\n This is not the first time nurses have threatened to embark on a strike over the non payment of their salaries.<\/p>\n They issued a similar warning in June 2014 over their nine months’<\/strong> <\/span><\/a>salary arrears.<\/p>\n Below is the full statement issued by the Nurses<\/strong><\/p>\n NOTICE OF STRIKE<\/p>\n We, the nurses of Accra Psychiatric Hospital who were employed and assumed duty on September 2013, June 2013, April 2014 and May 2014 respectively, write to notify you of our preparedness and readiness to embark on a sit-down-strike effective 3rd August, 2015 over the Ministry of Health\u2019s refusal to settle our unpaid salary arrears. We, having the passion for our work and less appetite to resort to such actions, have been compelled to do so due to the position Ministry of Health has taken concerning our salary arrears.<\/p>\n We have taken all legitimate and diplomatic steps to resolve this matter amicably in an attempt to avert any unrest but the Ministry of Health has well demonstrated its lack of interest in our case. It is worth noting, that in as much as several diplomatic attempts were opened from several fronts to resolve the challenges, the Ministry of Health remains adamant, hence our decision to lay down our tools.
