A Private Legal Practitioner, Solomon Oppong has asked the family of the convicted gunman who claims he planned to assassinate the President to appeal against the ruling handed down to their relative.

Charles Antwi was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment on Tuesday after he was arrested with a loaded gun at the church the President attends.

[contextly_sidebar id=”HAkZhFrMfmho1umQBgJYTWB11icA2xnR”]The judgement has however been described by some legal practitioners as flawed- they hold the view that the Judge sitting on the case was dismissive and failed to do a thorough investigation into the matter before giving the ruling.

The mother of the convict also confirmed on Wednesday that his son was not mentally stable.

Mr. Oppong on Eyewitness News said the family has to appeal the ruling since the mother of the convict had confirmed that his son indeed has a “mental difficulty.”

“From the little I have heard about this case, and after listening to the man when he spoke to the investigators, I think that there is a mental difficulty with the guy.I therefore think there is the need for the family to make a formal approach so that we can take up the matter up for them…It is not only the Attorney General who can appeal, the family can also appeal.”

The lawyer said he wants to represent the accused in court but could not act on his own unless he had been instructed to do so.

“I even made a pledge to support the young man before I heard his mother speak… I had already declared my support to represent the guy if the family approaches me. As lawyers you don’t act on your own, you have to act on instructions.”

Mr. Oppong also called for further investigations into the case, saying “these matters have to be delved into for the truth to come out.”
