The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) is asking the Electoral Commission (EC) to revoke the licenses of some political parties in the country.

The PPP argued that such political parties including the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP), the Independent People’s Party (IPP) and the YES People’s Party should be expunged from the EC’s political parties list for being dormant.

[contextly_sidebar id=”hQ8x2KOKstRUGXLHAIGx0gqXzGUYOBd4″]The National Secretary of the PPP, Kofi Asamoah-Siaw described the GCPP and the others as “IPAC political parties” who only attend IPAC meeting because of the “Fanta, the rice, the meat pie and the fried chicken and that is it.”

There are 24 registered political parties in Ghana under the fourth Republic but most of them do not contest in general elections.

According to the PPP, it is time the EC cleared the country’s political space.

Speaking to Citi News on the back of an EC report which says majority of political parties in Ghana have failed the requirement needed to run a political party, Kofi Asamoah-Siaw stressed that such parties must be banned.

He pointed out that these parties are never seen advocating for policies changes, reforms in the nation’s constitution, and neither are they seen advocating for people’s rights.

Their inactivity, according to the PPP gives room for them to be used as “propagandist tools for other political parties and create confusion in the minds of voters and we don’t get the best out of the electoral process.”

Asamoah-Siaw said it is time for the EC “to put its feet down to get rid of all these political parties so that there will be some sanity in the political space.”
