Ghana has appointed its first woman representative to the United Nations (UN) , Mrs Martha Ama Akyaa Povee.<\/p>\n
She is replacing Mr. Ken Kanda who retired in March 2015.<\/p>\n
[contextly_sidebar id=”IOgq100RzWcyr6hlXsIkJfrZtyGXayTh”]At a ceremony at the Flagstaff House to welcome Ms Povee, President Mahama urged her to work hard.<\/p>\n
The President also asked her to use her position to encourage women in the country to fulfill their dreams.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou have a distinguished career in the Foreign service and we all noted with admiration your work. I have personally have interacted with you when you were holding the fort at the mission in South Africa, the efficiency with which you approach your work is not something that we could overlook.\u00a0Being the first female representative to the UN, you are holding the standard of all Ghanaian women and all Ghanaian women will be looking up to you to distinguish yourself to show that what men can do women can do and even better.\u201d<\/p>\n
On her part Ghana\u2019s new permanent representative to the UN promised to work hard.<\/p>\n
\u201cImmediately I thank you Mr. President for the honour done me by this appointment and the implied task and confidence reposed in me to represent you at the United Nations. I accept the appointment and with a deep sense of humility I pledge to undertake the duties of ambassador and permanent representative with all the seriousness and commitment it demands.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI am conscious of following in the steps of distinguished ambassadors who served at Ghana\u2019s permanent mission in Newyork.\u201d<\/p>\n
