A middle-aged man is feared dead after he was trapped under a collapsed bridge at Ashalaja in the Ga South Municipality in Accra.

The Municipal Chief Executive of the Ga South Municipal Assembly, Nii Akwei Thompson in an interview with Citi News attributed the cause of the collapsed bridge to activities of tipper truck drivers in the area.

He said incessant sand winning in the area had exposed the bridge, adding that tipper truck operators were cautioned not to use it but they ignored.

Nii Akwei Thompson assured that the completion of another bridge currently under construction, will guarantee safety in the future.

“Last year, the residents of Ashalaja complained about weakness of the bridge. The feeder road engineers came to repair it. They even warned that vehicles with loads should not be allowed to use that bridge. But, these tipper truck operators, because of their sand winning activities around the area, they have been using this bridge and that’s what caused the collapse.”
