President John Mahama has charged the newly sworn in Supreme Court Justices to note the major role the Judiciary plays in the fight against corruption in Ghana.

He said though Ghanaians are sometimes unhappy with some rulings of the court on cases of corruption, the Supreme Court must still do its best to rid the country of corruption.

In his address, the President mentioned that the Judiciary is one of the critical arms of government, adding that “the judiciary and the legal profession are critical to the success of any democratic state.”

He however admitted that like any human institution, the Judiciary “could be prone to error by omission or commission but the nation “expects continuous improvement in all the three arms of government acting together but independently.”

“Let us work together to meet the aspirations of our people,” he said.

President Mahama noted that it is crucial for the Judiciary to be “committed partner in the fight against corruption” and further promised his government’s continuous support and respect for the independence of the judiciary in the exercise of their lawful duties.

Justice Yaw Apau who spoke on behalf of the two said they will do their job as required by the constitution.

He thanked the President for appointing them to serve as Justices of the highest court of the land.

He promised that “in all sincerity, we shall never disappoint you in the choice you made in settling on us when the need arose for you to fill the gap created upon the retirement of two distinguished members of the court.”

“Rather, I wish to assure you that we shall discharge our duties with dedication, honesty, integrity, excellence and zeal as required of us as Justices of the Highest Court of the land.”

Justice Apau added that he, together with Justice Pwamang “will make your Excellency and the good people of Ghana proud.”
