The youth of Adansi Asokwa constituency in the Ashanti Region have described calls for the nomination of a fresh Parliamentary candidate to challenge incumbent KT Hammond during the primaries as “baseless.”

Some agrieved persons claiming to be delegates and loyalists of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Adansi Asokwa constituency in the Ashanti Region, earlier issued a statement, saying they will not allow possible acclamation of long standing Member of Parliament, K.T Hammond as the Parliamentary nominee for the 2016 elections.

The group said the incumbent Member should not be reaffirmed for the 2016 elections because he had lost the support of his constituents.

[contextly_sidebar id=”RYbi5rEKuqnJQmU9kTal4yl4DXkjtiVm”] The youth in the area have however dismissed their claims, arguing that the trend analysis used by the group to arrive at its conclusion “lacks merit and cannot be used for any decision.”

A statement issued by the youth noted that the “analysis was not holistic but only to suit the whims and caprices of the organizers and their paymasters.”

They said the party was able to retain the seat because the incumbent Member of Parliament injected resources into the campaign.

“We won with candidate KT Hammond in 2000 because he injected resources into the campaign and visited all areas to secure the seat for us in 2000. Our campaign was attractive hence the victory.”

Below is the full statement issued by the group

We have followed the press conference organized by a group which is calling for a fresh candidate for the 2016 Parliamentary election in Adansi Asokwa with keen interest. The trend analysis done by the group lacks merit and cannot be used for any decision. Using 2008 as a base year is flawed and raises questions about the integrity of the group. The analysis was not holistic but only to suit the whims and caprices of the organizers and their paymasters.

Ladies and gentlemen and our friends from the media we called you here today to set the records straight. The following are the true facts:

Trend Analysis

In doing an honest trend analysis, ideally, one must either begin from the year Hon K.T Hammond started or the performance of the party before he first contested. The base year must present details and facts for comprehensive trend and comparative analysis. This was lacking in their statement.

Prior to the 2000 election, NPP had lost all the 1996 election to the NDC’s Hon John Gyasi. We lost 1996 to the NDC even though we had one of the best brains and Royal as a candidate. Justice Akuamoah Boateng who represented us in 1996 was the Abusuapanin of Asokwa. The following are the results:

2012

NPP 15,796 51.06%

NDC 14,157 42.89%

2008

NPP 13,659 55.7%

NDC 9,219 37.6%

Others ——–

2004

NPP 15,176 62.9%

NDC 8,759 36.3%

Others ——–

2000

NPP 10,306 54.4%

NDC 7,230 38.2%

Others ——–

1996

NPP 8,811 55.1%

NDC 10,999 44.1%

K.T Hammond era

It is worth noting that the ADANSI ASOKWA CONSTITUENCY is not one of the safe seats of NPP in the Ashanti Region. It is misplaced to think that, the party will win the seat with any candidate. We won with candidate KT Hammond in 2000 because he injected resources into the campaign and visited all areas to secure the seat for us in 2000. Our campaign was attractive hence the victory.

Again, his background as a Fante, Ashanti and Muslim has been key in our electoral fortunes since 2000. We have so many Fante settlers and Muslims in the constituency who are largely sympathizers of the NDC. With candidate K. T. Hammond, they saw him as their own. Therefore they voted for us. The talk about changing Hon K.T Hammond must be coming from faceless few who know nothing about the dynamics of the constituency and who are in the pockets of our political opponent who know that with our incumbent MP they have a formidable contestant.

Our votes depreciated in 2008 because the CPP candidate was from Asokwa and Brofeyedru. As expected he was supported by family members and friends who have voted NPP in previous elections and his attractive campaign resurrected the CPP and its members who vote NPP in previous elections voted for him in 2008 hence a depreciation of our votes by 1000. Also in 2012, the NDC candidate came from Anwhiaso, a town which is one of our strongholds. They voted skirt and blouse. That is why Nana Akufo Addo got more votes than Hon. K. T Hammond.

In 2016, the NDC is likely to present the same candidate from Anhwiaso, so the skirt and blouse is expected. If Hammond doesn’t represent us, we may lose most votes from Muslims and settler communities who are largely Fantes and NDC sympathizers and have been voting skirt and blouse since 2000. As it stands now no one in the constituency has these qualities to win the seat for the NPP in the event he retires voluntarily even today or in the nearest future. Let us therefore come together and support him and have a good succession plan and a strategy to takeover from him when the time is right for a change in the Adansi Asokwa Constituency in other to retain the seat.

DISQUALIFICATION OF PAST ASPIRANTS

The claim of the group that, Hon K. T. Hammond has always been favoured over other aspirants is false and malicious. The constitution of the NPP prescribes eligibility for all members who wish to contest as the Parliamentary Candidate. The basic qualification is that a person must have nurtured the constituency and a card bearing member. The question is that, has there been any evidence of involvement of any of these aspirants and the current aspirants in the activities of the party? What have they contributed towards the development of the party since 2000? We can confidently say NO to these questions. If an aspirant cannot provide any evidence of nurturing the party, and produce valid party card, the person is therefore unfit to contest in these elections. All the past aspirants and the current one do not meet these basic qualifications. Richard Oduro and those who nominated him forged party cards. This is not surprising because he is not known in the constituency. This matter has been reported to the police ans he is under investigation. Richard should note that qualification to contest any election is not sought in the airwaves or through press conferences. He will never become our MP because he is not known in the party and the constituency. Richard Oduro Anokye left Asokwa somewhere in 2001 to Sefwi where he hails from. He has only recently made appearance at the constituency where he has no address and permanent residence. He came clearly with an agenda
financed"" by some faceless people to disturb our political fortunes.

THE 284 DELEGATES CLAIM IS A HOAX

It is surprising to note the number put out in the media. We can confidently say that, persons who attended the said press conference cannot be more than 10 delegates. This attempt only suggests desperation on their part and their quest to malign Hon. K.T Hammond. As it stands, the constituency and the Adansi Traditional Area are united behind Hon. K.T Hammond and we can assure all of a resounding victory in 2016 for the NPP.

MINISTERIAL APPOINTMENT

Without doubt, Hon K.T Hammond will be a Minister in Nana Addo’s government which will be formed in 2017. He was the only person from Adansi who served as a Minister under President Kufour from January 2001 to January 2009. Being a minister comes with so many privileges for a constituency. His records as a Minister between 2001 and 2008 are there to show. This is one of the reasons why we must all support Hon K.T Hammond to retain his seat in Parliament. He has not been made the Nkosohene of Adansi Traditional Area by the Adansihene and his sub-chiefs for nothing. Almost all the development projects in Adansi since 2001 bear his signature.

Conclusion

Let us come together and groom a potential candidate to democratically take over from Hon. K.T Hammond when he retires. 2016 is too close to have a new face who will potentially lose 20% of our core votes because of the Muslim/settler factor. The 2016 agenda is a serious one and not a time to experiment. Richard Oduro Anokye should report to his paymasters that his diabolic plan did not work.

We therefore urge delegates to vote convincingly for Hon. K.T Hammond who remains our best bet.

HANDS OFF OUR K.T

.
