The Ghana Prisons Service Council on Monday called on the management of Accra based Citi FM to seek their support for the ongoing prisons reforms.<\/p>\n
Conditions at the country\u2019s prisons have seen little improvement despite countless appeals.<\/p>\n
[contextly_sidebar id=”BDa5JvYIYcHQBvGDW9wL0C0kG1EwKPER”]The Prisons Service has in view of these challenges introduced a \u00a0new programme dubbed \u201cProject Efiase\u201d to support inmates at various prisons.<\/p>\n
Speaking to citifmonline.com, the\u00a0Director General of the Council, Matilda Baffuor Awuah who led the team explained that the project also seeks to bring on board the whole society to enable the Prisons Service administration to undertake some reforms which will bring the Prisons Service up to an appreciable standard.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Prison Service is overcrowded .There are more prisoners in custody now than the prison system can maintain and because of that there is a lot of suffering. There are a lot of human right abuses and I think it is time for the society to be made aware that various prisoners should be clearly classified and put into separate cells to enable us undertake the reformation that is important for prisoners to change,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n
The team has so far been to various organisations,including embassies, and media organiations to seek for\u00a0support for various inmates.<\/p>\n
The Chairman of the Prisons Service, Rev, Dr. Stephen Wengam also appealed to various organisations and agencies to support the project since inmates in various prisons live under deplorable conditions.<\/p>\n
