{"id":127037,"date":"2015-06-22T12:24:45","date_gmt":"2015-06-22T12:24:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/?p=127037"},"modified":"2015-06-22T12:24:45","modified_gmt":"2015-06-22T12:24:45","slug":"old-fadama-residents-were-informed-ahead-of-demolition-ama","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2015\/06\/old-fadama-residents-were-informed-ahead-of-demolition-ama\/","title":{"rendered":"Old Fadama residents were informed ahead of demolition &#8211; AMA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has said it duly informed residents of Sodom and Gomorrah before undertaking a demolition exercise in the area.<\/p>\n<p>The AMA task force and other security services<a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/2015\/06\/20\/sodom-and-gomorrah-demolishing-underway-photos\/#sthash.8N1jqom0.dpbs\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #666699;\"><strong> demolished over a thousand<\/strong> <\/span><\/a>structures in the area last Saturday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/IMG-20150620-WA0014.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-126640\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/IMG-20150620-WA0014.jpg\" alt=\"demolition\" width=\"667\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/IMG-20150620-WA0014.jpg 667w, https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/IMG-20150620-WA0014-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 667px) 100vw, 667px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>[contextly_sidebar id=&#8221;pguJa5YVgLGz1CuzBRbl43I08m3uYQfJ&#8221;]The exercise was carried out under the supervision of the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo\u00a0and the Mayor of Accra, Alfred Vanderpuije.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of the slum dwellers who are mostly migrants from the northern part of the country were consequently rendered homeless, while scrap metals and make shift shops were also destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>The residents who are displeased with the demolition hit \u00a0the streets on Monday to protest against the exercise.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/IMG-20150622-WA0027.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-127137\" src=\"http:\/\/4cd.e16.myftpupload.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/IMG-20150622-WA0027.jpg\" alt=\"IMG-20150622-WA0027\" width=\"816\" height=\"612\" srcset=\"https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/IMG-20150622-WA0027.jpg 816w, https:\/\/citifmonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/IMG-20150622-WA0027-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 816px) 100vw, 816px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>They say\u00a0have been betrayed by the government since the AMA failed to notify them ahead of the demolition.<\/p>\n<p>However speaking on the <strong>Citi Breakfast Show<\/strong>, the Public Relations Officer of the AMA, Numo Blafo dismissed\u00a0such reports, saying: \u201cWe alerted them. In fact, I will say we were at the Old Fadama area with the members of the Council of State. We have also been having meetings with their opinion leaders \u00a0and chiefs to pave way for the removal of the structures.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dredging of Odaw River<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Numo Blafo further explained that the removal of those structures was aimed at paving way for a major dredging exercise at the Korle Lagoon.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, about 100 structures from the Banks of the Lagoon to the Odaw were demolished to that effect, adding\u00a0that work on the dredging of the river had already taken off.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Re-encroachment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Asked about the measures being taken to prevent residents \u00a0from returning to the area, Numo Blafo stated that &#8220;management will sit down and come to a conclusion&#8221; on the next line of action.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>By: Marian Efe Ansah\/citifmonline.com\/Ghana<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has said it duly informed residents of Sodom and Gomorrah before undertaking a demolition exercise in the area.
