Some members of the Krobo youth are up in arms\u00a0over the ongoing Parliamentary debate and the determined effort by the Minority to change the location for the proposed University of Environment and Sustainable Development (Eastern University) from Somanya in the Yilo Krobo Municipality to Koforidua in the New Juabeng Municipality.<\/p>\n
According to the\u00a0youth group, Kloma Gbi, the resolve by the Minority to kick against the bill during its third reading to compel government to change the site is unfortunate.<\/p>\n
[contextly_sidebar id=”uwiYuofJuF1L1bG3mTntDlPdOyti4rtd”]They indicated that the argument by the Minority, led by the Deputy Minority Leader, Dominic Nitiwul that Koforidua, (New Juabeng) the regional capital, is more suited for the facility, is ungrounded and literally constitutes a vote of no confidence in the committee of eminent and knowledgeable Ghanaians on whose findings and recommendations the government is situating the project in the Krobo area, with a satellite campus at Donkokrom in the Afram Plains North District.<\/p>\n
Citing University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwah and the University of Education, Winneba as examples, all of which are not in regional capitals, the youth said there is no law or rule requiring that all public universities be sited in regional capitals which are fast overcrowding with devastating effect.<\/p>\n
Head of Communications for Kloma Gbi, Henking A. Adjase-Kodjo said: \u201cThe Minority\u2019s arguments is ungrounded and defeats, among others, the concept and essence of decentralization. It only goes to shows our reluctance to evenly spread development around the country\u201d.<\/p>\n
He added, \u201cWe expected that in the face of the growing congestion in the capitals (with its attendant negative issues as being experienced), arising out of the overconcentration of such important facilities in the cities, key decision making bodies like Parliament will adopt more proactive measures to divert the increasing traffic and reduce the alarming rural-urban drift through a conscious and strategic spread of developmental projects such as this\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are surprised and saddened at the strong opposition to the location of the project and the threat by the Deputy Minority Leader to rally his side to kick against the bill during its third reading.”<\/p>\n
Even more disturbing is the seeming silence on the part of the three (3) Krobo MPs who should be seen raising convincing arguments to justify government\u2019s decision. We want to hear from them at this critical point,\u201d he added.
