The Minority in Parliament has threatened to sue government if it fails to seek parliamentary approval before issuing guarantees for a power purchase agreement.

[contextly_sidebar id=”HEN1jsg4giIcVb2U4z78obfh1FXyOql7″]The GNPC is expected to issue two bank guarantees of US $50 million each to Karpower on behalf of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) for the deployment of 450 megawatts of power to Ghana.

The Minority in Parliament is however kicking against the move, insisting the deal should be approved by Parliament before the GNPC issues the bank guarantees.

Last Friday, the Minister of Power, Dr Kwabena Donkor on the floor of Parliament downplayed the Minority’s demands, arguing the agreement does not require Parliamentary approval.

But the Member of Parliament for Effutu, who is leading the Minority’s campaign against the deal stuck to their argument that the Minister got it all wrong.

“First of all the Minister got it all wrong. On the floor of the House, one could simply describe the Minister as someone who was trying to act with some mischief. He was being economical with the truth,” Afenyo Markin stated.

“If this goes on we will fulfill our promise to the people of Ghana to protect their interests and go to court,” he added.

The Minister further described the deal as a private transaction but the MP rubbished such claims saying “The ECG is 100% owned by the people of Ghana. The deal is not a private transaction as Power Minister indicated”

“People must not be allowed to use this ECG and KarPowership deal to line their pockets,”he posited.
