Albert Essien bows out<\/strong><\/p>\nAlbert Essien was appointed CEO of Ecobank in March 2014.<\/p>\n
His appointment followed the dismissal of Thierry Tanoh as CEO and brought to an end, a nine-month battle over allegations of mismanagement that shook confidence in the pan-African lender.<\/p>\n
Prior to his appointment Albert Essien was the deputy chief executive of the bank and was in charge of the corporate and investment banking arm for more than 20 years.<\/p>\n
He told Citi Business News after his appointment that running the bank had been his dream from the onset.<\/p>\n
\u2018Immediately I got into Ecobank I said I will run that bank, i told myself, i will become the MD of the bank.
\nThere is nothing wrong with having ambitions it\u2019s how you mange them, there should be no crab mentality, you should not stand on the shoulders of others to get to the top.\u2019 He said.<\/p>\n
Mr Ayeyemi, 52, will replace Albert Essien, who retires on 30 June, 2015 after 25 years of meritorious service with the Group.<\/p>\n
According to the bank ‘an interim arrangement will be made by the Ecobank Board for the management of the Group during the period 1 July through 31 August, pending the resumption of the new GCEO’.<\/p>\n
Mr Essien a veteran banker was recently awarded the African Banker of the Year prize at the 9th edition of the African Banker Awards.<\/p>\n
New boss of Ecobank\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\nMr Ayeyemi is a highly experienced banker who has had a long and successful career with Citigroup, where he is currently Chief Executive Officer of Citigroup\u2019s sub-Saharan Africa division, based in Johannesburg.<\/p>\n
He is an Accounting graduate of the University of Ife, now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Nigeria, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree with First Class Honours.<\/p>\n
He also studied at the University of London and is an alumnus of Harvard Business School\u2019s Advanced Management Programme.<\/p>\n
A Chartered Accountant, Mr Ayeyemi is also a trained UNIX Administrator and Network Operating Systems Manager.<\/p>\n
His many interests include business strategy, economics, process engineering and technology.<\/p>\n
