A former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie has asked the party’s current administration to settle a debt the party owes Prudential Bank.

This comes on the back of a leaked letter from the bank asking guarantors to ensure that the NPP Elections 2012 Fundraising Committee reimburse an overdraft facility of over GH¢2 million that it took for the purposes of the 2012 elections by April 30 2015.

[contextly_sidebar id=”PRfT0sjuTgCcLyzqdumdlLWnpAKHPZnL”]The Former Chief Executive of Data Bank, Ken Ofori Atta has in a statemet categorically stated that he is responsible for any obligation that arises from a GHC 1.5 m loan facility secured during the 2012 New Patriotic Party (NPP) elections.

He clarified that the facility was taken to “complement” the resources the NPP had raised to support the operations of Polling Station Agents.

However, Owusu Afriyie, popularly known as Sir John, told Citi News that the current Paul Afoko-led administration, which has been in office for over a year, should absorb and pay the debt, instead of painting the previous administration black.

“We have been there for a year plus so nobody can go back and accuse us of not absolving the debt because the campaign team were still preparing … whatever money that they brought. Now that we are no longer there those accounts have been handed over to the new administration and it is for them to sit down with the campaign team to iron out majority chances that there are,” said Owusu Afriyie.

Sir John was optimistic attempts to sabotage him and his previous adminstration will prove fruitless.

“They have sought to paint us black so people will say that Sir John absconded. I thank God that all the things are coming out , the letters are being unfolded so that we have no hand in these monies that they want to blame us for.”

Letter was leaked

Sir John was also suspicious the letter asking the guarantors to settle the debt might have been leaked since the Bank or the two guarantors written to would not deliberately do so.

“The Bank has a relationship with its kind of confidentiality so I want to believe that the bank as a professional institution will not leak a letter to Ofori Atta to the press.I believe that Ofori Atta will not leak a letter written to him..People are being mischievous.”

Details of Letter from Prudential Bank

The notice of demand from the bank which was addressed to the national chairman and the director of the NPP Election 2012 Fundraising Committee and copied to the two guarantors said: “As indicated in our letter under reference, the Bank of Ghana Supervision Department has picked the Party’s account for downgrading due to non-performance. This require the Audit and Risk Management Sub-Committee of the Bank’s Board to take action to recover the debt.”

“We are therefore by this letter requesting you, as guarantors of the facility, to ensure that the overdrawn balance of Gh¢2,290,631.36 together with interest thereon is paid off immediately but in any case not later than 30th April 2015,” the notice dated April 21, 2015 and signed by the bank’s director of credit administration HT Ayernor and chief legal officer, loan recovery department Osei Yaw Osafo directed.

It threatened to initiate a court action against the NPP if it fails to comply with the directive.
