The minority New Patriotic Party (NPP) members in Parliament have joined the calls asking the party’s National Chairman, Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agyepong to step down from their respective positions following the death of the party’s Upper East Regional Chairman.

NPP’s Upper East Chairman, Adam Mahama died last Thursday after he was ambushed and attacked with acid.

Some supporters of the party are blaming events that took place prior to the incident involving Paul Afoko and Kwabena for his death.

[contextly_sidebar id=”62R8utJDC2dwdFIN5Mp5qSYlWAVhZHl8″]The two were chased out Bolgatanga for attempting to meet regional executives without informing the Regional Chairman, Adam Mahama.

His death has triggered what some describe as confusion and deep divisions within the party with many calling for the resignation of Paul Afoko, and Kwabena Agyepong.

Brother of Paul Afoko, Gregory Afoko has also been arrested in connection with the attack and has been charged with murder.

So far NPP executives in nine regions of the country have petitioned the National Council of the party to get the two national executives step aside until investigations are completed.

The Party’s Council of Elders have reportedly also written to the two leaders asking for same.

The Minority in Parliament after a meeting on Tuesday resolved that it was prudent for the two to step aside in the interest of peace.

“That in the circumstances, the two national officers be requested, in the interest of peace, unity, trust and stability in the party, to step aside to allow for an impartial investigation into these matters especially the gruesome murder of Mr Adam Mahama, the Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP),” they observed.

They further appealed to NPP members to remain calm and “refrain from doing anything that will further accentuate the tension in the party.”

“The NPP must overcome the current difficulties in the overall interest of mother Ghana.”
