The council of elders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed confidence that the tensions within the party will be resolved before the campaign for 2016 election year begins.

The council has thus appealed to members to stay calm as it explores ways of resolving all internal challenges.

[contextly_sidebar id=”srvxNfskrlGORYf0rD9LXGb9j8gRNvr4″]“I would want to appeal to all our supporters and the general public on my own behalf and on behalf of the council for people to hold their nerves,” spokesperson for the council, Dr. Adjei Bawuah told Citi News.

The party is struggling to keep a united front after its Upper East Regional chairman, Adam Mahama was killed after an acid attack.

The incident occurred a week after the National Chairman, Paul Afoko and the General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong were chased out of Bolgatanga for holding a meeting without the knowledge of Alhaji Adam.

Afoko’s younger brother has been arrested by the Police in connection with the attack but some party members are demanding the dismissal of the two national executives.

On Monday, the NPP regional executives in all 10 regions met simultaneously to consider impeaching them.

Three regions including, Central, Eastern and Volta Regions voted in favour of plans to remove Afoko and Agyepong.

The party’s presidential candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo in a statement discounted claims that he instigated the impeachment processes.

Despite all these developments, Dr. Bawuah insisted that the party is not in a crisis.

“We are all shocked by this particular incident and I don’t think anybody should interpret it to mean that the party is in disarray – the party is together,” he said.

According to him, the council will be focused on bringing together the rank and file of the party to forge a united front ahead of the 2016 elections.

He indicated that “like all human organizations, misunderstandings will happen and that is what demonstrates the humanity of such an organization but we would want everybody to have confidence in the fact that the party is together, the party is committed to taking the reins of administration after the elections next year.”
