The President of IMANI Ghana, Franklin Cudjoe has asserted that the recent attack which claimed the life of the Upper East regional chairman Adam Mahama may be the turning point for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to the IMANI boss, the gruesome nature of the attack and the loss of the NPP Chairman on Thursday could provoke much needed changes in the largest opposition party in the country.

[contextly_sidebar id=”gSoNdeXCFZt8G1t1zlVIWYLy7Nxg5Xgq”]Franklin Cudjoe said on Citi FM‘s news analysis programme The Big Issue on Saturday: “It appears that, however sadistic, however cruel that this may be the turning point [for the NPP]….It looks to me that even though this death was totally needless and uncalled for, it appears that you have got to get to a dastardly level before things begin to normalize.”

Franklin Cudjoe added: “I do not wish that this is the way that a party that purports to be waiting in the wings to take up the mantle of government, would be turned around…if doesn’t change the party, if it doesn’t make the party take stock, then I don’t know what the case will be.”

The Upper East regional chairman of the NPP, Adam Mahama was attacked with acid on Wednesday and subsequently passed away from his injuries the next day.

The Police are still investigating the attack but it is reported to have been politically motivated.

Days before the attack, youth in the region had allegedly on the orders of Adam Mahama, disrupted a planned meeting between the National Chairman of the NPP, Paul Afoko and the party’s General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong and some regional executives of the party.

Mahama denied the allegations raised against him although he subsequently apologized for the disturbances

One person has been arrested in connection with the attack and is reported to be the brother of the National Chairman, Paul Afoko.

However, the Afoko family has come out to defend Gregory Afoko, claiming that he was asleep at the time of the attack.

They remain convinced that the real culprit will be found and Gregory’s name cleared.

They released a statement saying: “Gregory, on the night Adams was attacked, was at home and nowhere near the crime scene. He had been asleep when the unfortunate incident happened. Indeed, the police officers who were at the family house to arrest him touched the engine of his motor bike and noticed that it was cold indicating that it had not been running.”
