A cholera outbreak in Tanzania has infected about 3,000 Burundian refugees who are seeking refuge in that country.<\/p>\n
Thousands of Burundians have fled their country to neighbouring Tanzania due to violence in their country following President Pierre Nkurunziza’s decision to seek a third term in office.<\/p>\n
According to the UN’s refugee agency, about 400 new cholera cases are being recorded daily.<\/p>\n
A UN spokesman has described the cholera outbreak as “new, worrying, and growing additional complication”.<\/p>\n
31 people have been killed so far including two locals and 29 Burundian refugees.<\/p>\n
The UN has attributed the outbreak to the cramped, dirty conditions in Tanzania’s lakeside Kagunga area, where many of the Burundian refugees are residing.<\/p>\n
The UN refugee agency is predicting that the number of people fleeing Burundi could double in the next six months.<\/p>\n
