National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Afoko has appealed to the rank and file of the party to support him and the General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong to overcome the many challenges facing them.

In an audio message to the party members, Afoko said: “I am saying this to all New Patriotic Party citizens; stand firm and work with me and Kwabena.”

[contextly_sidebar id=”A2e9KbSlbBElzLD3Vt6WBDBhd30MQy96″]This appeal is his attempt to quell the tensions which has engulfed the NPP due to the acid attack on the Upper East Regional chairman, Adam Mahama which to his death.

Afoko and Agyepong have been accused fueling tensions in the party, which triggered the attack on the Upper East Regional Chairman.

Some angry youth of the party disrupted a meeting Mr Afoko and Kwabena Agyepong had organised in the region, claiming Adam Mahama was not informed, a move the deceased openly criticised.

Some NPP youth later formed another group in the region to protect Mr Afoko if he decides to visit the Upper East Region.

Following reports that Mr Afoko’s younger brother has been arrested in connection with Mahama’s death, the rumoured divisions within the NPP seem to have deepened.

Despite the call for calm from the flagbearer and other leading members of the NPP, some party members including outspoken Kennedy Agyapong are calling for the head of Afoko and Agyepong.

Some NPP youth group in the Upper East Region have threatened mayhem should the two national leaders make any attempt to attend the funeral of the late Adam Mahama.

Afoko however urged party members to “remain steadfast” because he together with Agyepong “will do that which is right for the party and by the party and I can assure you that at the end of the day, victory will be ours, the party will see power next year and all our detractors will be put to shame.”

He acknowledged that the party us going through difficult times but he expressed optimism that “the law will take its course and whoever is found culpable will be dealt with by the law” because the NPP is “supreme.”

“The darkest hour is just before dawn when the light begins to shine again. Thank you,” he added.

There have been calls by some of the party’s big wigs for the chairman and Mr Agyepong to resign because according to them, their continued stay is gradually destroying the party.

NPP firebrand Kennedy Agyepong has also alleged that the two are complicit in the murder of the Upper East Regional Chairman.

Mr Afoko however in a statement on his Facebook wall, encouraged party members to stop fueling unfounded accusations over the death of Mr Mahama.

According to him, he had a good relationship with Adam Mahama and that the issues surrounding the disruption of a meeting in the region a week ago had been resolved between the two.
