The National Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammy Awuku has dismissed assertions that the murder of the party’s Upper East Regional chairman and the reported divisions within the party might prevent the party from winning the 2016 elections.

He said he is very convinced that the 2016 elections will be based on issues affecting the lives of Ghanaians and not the “over blown” issues the NPP.

[contextly_sidebar id=”tPiwQ3VyxRiDVxLed4a7DX5yhx1FHWzh”]“I’ve heard people saying the NPP is not ready for power. I totally disagree. When people are going to vote in 2016, at that point in time when there are no jobs, they have lost their livelihoods, they have not functioned as a business for the past two or three years, families are struggling to cope with the high cost of living, food taken off the tables of families and replaced with tears…

“I do not think that that person will go and stand at the polling center and say because something happened in NPP last year, I don’t think the NPP can satisfy my needs – I don’t think so. People vote according to so many factors.”

Sammy Awuku remarked that despite the petty squabbles which occur within the party and creates bad publicity, “anytime the presidential candidate or running mate of the party step out or meet the Ghanaian people, the welcome they receive is simply tumultuous and overwhelming.”

There have been reports of the existence of factions within Ghana’s main opposition party which has led to numerous squabbles and violence.

The National Chairman and General Secretary have accused some elements within the party of scheming to create tensions between them and other leading members of the party.

The murder of the NPP’s Upper East Regional chairman, Adam Mahama has raised concerns that the party’s visions have deepened and the failure of the executives to resolve the matter will is indicative that they are not prepared to govern the nation.

Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Friday, Sammy Awuku blamed the media for blowing the seeming troubles in the NPP out of proportion.

He said he has every cause to believe that the media is obsessed with the NPP saying, “when it comes to the issue of the NPP, sometimes I think because of the obsession of the media – whether it is lust or love, I don’t know but anything that has to do with the NPP, the media seems to enjoy it.”

“Sometimes, they over blow it and sometimes, they think that everything about the NPP makes news.”

He argued that the opposition party is not in charge of collecting taxes “that people show so much interest in us” but conceded that “it’s a democracy and they see the NPP to have media frenzy so any least thing, they contribute to it and escalate the situation.”

“It should tell you that the Ghanaian people, their minds are made up. They are not now going to decide the fate of the NDC [National Democratic Congress]”
