A member of the Electoral Commission’s reform committee, Dr Ransford Gyampo is calling for sanctions to be applied to all EC officials who approved the botched registration of eligible voters.

[contextly_sidebar id=”FMTiOBjQlM0TnTIvvamuumSW53SvgcYa”]According to Dr Ransford Gyampo the said officials by their decision have caused the nation a great deal of money.

The EC on Tuesday suspended an on-going voter registration exercise after pressure from political parties and some pressure groups who threatened going to court over the matter.

The political parties had insisted that the process should be halted to ensure further deliberation with the Inter Party Advisory Committee (IPAC).

Voter registration illegal

Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Matthew Opoku Prempeh had described exercise as illegal insisting that the rules guiding the exercise does not conform with the provisions of the 1992 constitution.

Speaking to Citi News, Dr. Gyampo who is also a Political Science Lecturer with the University of Ghana bemoaned such unilateral actions by the Electoral Commission and called for a cessation in such attitudes.

What the indecent haste?

He said: “When we presented our proposals for electoral reforms, we were told that IPAC meeting will be held to validate the proposal before they begin implementation. This was part of the proposal and yet no IPAC meeting has been convened and one person does things in a manner that brings shame and disrepute to the EC.”

“What prevented them from waiting to the IPAC meeting slated for Friday? Why the indecent haste? We cannot go on into the future without being guided by what has happened in the past. These tendencies tend to unnecessarily create distrust for that institution. This is an institution that has suffered severe distrust and to some extent legitimacy deficit.”
