The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has described the governing National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) plan to use a party’s committee to create jobs for its members as unfair.

Communications Director for the NPP, Nana Akomea on Eyewitness News said the NDC’s policy is “mind boggling” and is in complete violation of the country’s constitution and the governing party’s 2012 manifesto.

[contextly_sidebar id=”GLErvYbHsG7poQROWNdrzrUnoBI1Y0jU”]“There are over 1,000 things wrong with it… the constitution, even in the NDC manifesto and constitution, you will find out that they talk about anti-discrimination and I can’t believe that the ruling party will actually put forth this proposition before Ghanaians,” he said.

The NDC on Wednesday inaugurated a number of committees including a Business Development Committee which is chaired by the Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr. Ekwow Spio Gabrah.

This committee has been tasked to create jobs for members of the party in both the private and the public sector.

By this, the party hopes to create internal wealth to support its operations as well as to empower and make its members economically self reliant.

Nana Akomea described it as “the most bankrupt idea from this government…it’s so extraordinary I don’t even have the words to describe it.”

According to him, there are millions of unemployed Ghanaian youth who urgently need jobs and as such if the NDC wanted to create jobs for every citizen irrespective of his or her political affiliation, that would have been a “good trade but why are we going to create it for only the NDC people?”

He said it is “very difficult to understand” how the ruling party came by this idea and described it as “the most extraordinary thing I have heard in at least the last 20 years…I’ve never heard it anywhere.”

The NPP’s Communications Director observed that implementing this idea will place non-NDC members at a disadvantage in the acquisition of jobs.

“What this also means is that people will decide not to pay taxes to the government because they don’t have NDC cards,” he added.

He was convinced citizens “are going to be outraged at this new proposition coming from the NDC – It’s the lowest of the low.”

“It is mind boggling! It shatters my mind and I am sure millions of Ghanaians will be completely outraged that they pay taxes to government and they are going to discriminate against them in terms of provision of jobs on the basis of their political party affiliations.”

Nana Akomea however denied that in the last NPP government, a similar policy was put in place to support its members economically.

“In the NPP’s time, nothing of the sort happened; at least it wasn’t a national policy put forth to Ghanaians. I can tell you without any hesitation that the NPP never announced a policy to Ghanaians.”
