Apple announced Monday it is expanding its clean energy and environmental protection initiatives in China, including striking a forest conservation partnership with a prominent environmental group, and a goal of running 100% of its manufacturing facilities only on renewable energy.

Apple’s manufacturing centers in China have come under the media spotlight for poor labor and environmental practices in the past.

As part of the new initiatives, Apple will partner with the World Wildlife Fund for five years to protect up to 1 million acres of “responsibly managed working forests.”

This means the forests can still be harvested for pulp, paper and wood products, but in a sustainable manner.

It also will keep the land out of the hands of real estate developers, who could otherwise turn the lands into residential or commercial developments.

Over the past few years, the company has taken several visible steps to position itself as a leader in the technology industry when it comes to environmental stewardship.

Apple has set a goal of achieving a “net-zero impact” on the world’s supply of sustainable virgin fiber and to power all its operations worldwide on 100% renewable energy.

China has some lofty goals of its own, in part aimed at curbing the country’s notoriously noxious air quality problems that are sickening its citizens.

China is the world’s top emitter of greenhouse gases, and has committed to peak its emissions by 2030 at the latest, and increase its share of renewable power to 20% by 2020.

To put the latter goal into perspective, meeting this target would require China to deploy as much non-fossil fuel generating capacity as the total generating capacity that the U.S. has in place today.

“Forests, like energy, can be renewable resources,” said Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of environmental initiatives and former administrator of the U.S. EPA during President Obama’s first term, in a statement.

“We believe we can run on naturally renewable resources and ensure that we protect — and create — as much sustainable working forest as needed to produce the virgin paper in our product packaging. This is an important step toward that goal and our commitment to leave the world better than we found it.”

Apple CEO Tim Cook has spoken about the company’s commitment to taking action to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to lessen the severity of global warming, describing combating global warming as a “core value” of the company.

Critics question whether such corporate commitments amount to much more than “greenwashing” tactics, meaning that they are aimed at compensating for bad publicity regarding the company’s treatment of manufacturing workers at facilities with which it has contracts, environmental footprint or other activities.

Yet Cook has spoken out many times about how central he thinks environmental stewardship is to the company.

The announcement on Monday marks an acceleration of the company’s efforts to cut emissions from its manufacturing centers. The company already powers 100% of its data centers through renewable energy, something it accomplished in part by building large solar farms in the U.S.

“We’ve set an example by greening our data centers, retail stores and corporate offices, and we’re ready to start leading the way toward reducing carbon emissions from manufacturing,” Cook said in a statement. (He also took the opportunity of the environmental announcement, and a trip to Beijing, to write his first post on China’s Weibo social network.)

Apple now plans to expand its renewable energy projects to power its manufacturing plants in China.

Cook continued:

This won’t happen overnight—in fact it will take years—but it’s important work that has to happen, and Apple is in a unique position to take the initiative toward this ambitious goal. It is a responsibility we accept. We are excited to work with leaders in our supply chain who want to be on the cutting edge of China’s green transformation.

In April, Apple launched its first solar project in China, and the company says two 20-megawatt solar installations in Sichuan Province will generate far more energy than needed to power all of Apple’s corporate offices and retail stores in the entire country. For the solar projects, Apple is partnering with Chinese companies, including Leshan Electric Power and SunPower.

According to a company press release, 87% of Apple’s global operations, which includes manufacturing, currently run on renewable energy.

In the U.S., Apple struck a similar forest conservation agreement last month with The Conservation Fund to conserve more than 36,000 acres of working forestland in Maine and North Carolina.

The majority of U.S. forests are working forests, but many of these lands are being sold in small chunks to real estate developers, Larry Selzer, CEO of The Conservation, Fund told Mashablein an interview. The Apple partnership with The Conservation Fund works to combat this trend, he says.
