President John Dramani Mahama has said government plans to set up an independent prosecutor office which will prosecute persons indicted in the Auditor-General’s report.

Over the years, officials indicted in the Auditor General’s report have in most cases been left of the hook.

[contextly_sidebar id=”4fXJlSiVppTRsdyupgw8LryNkUlGP8FT”]Aside public officials some reputable institutions including the Attorney General’s department and the Judiciary have been chastised for allowing corruption to erode their values.

Many have recommended the establishment of an independent prosecutor’s office solely in charge of corruption to end the canker.

Speaking at the second public forum on the Single Spine Salary Structure, President Mahama stated that government is willing to collaborate with Parliament to quickly set up the office.

“Recently there has been a proposal to set up a sole judge who will take up those cases. I believe that it should be possible for us to create a special prosecutor’s office who has the fiat of the Attorney General’s to deal with all cases emanating from the Public Accounts Committee”

The President said Parliament, the Attorney General’s department and the Chief Justice are “working on a means by which we can fully implement the Auditor General’s report … after the Public Accounts Committee has completed with it.”

According to him, “government is going to work with Parliament and the Chief Justice to [also] ensure that everybody against whom adverse reports have been made in the Auditor’s report are made to face the full rigorous of the law or is surcharged and made to refund such monies that have been misappropriated.”
