The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) General Secretary, Kwabena Agyepong is alleging that some persons within the party are trying to create enmity between him and the party flagbearer, Nana Akufo-Addo.

Speaking on Accra based Oman FM, Agyepong said he has a good relationship with Nana Addo but some party members want to cause a rift between them.

[contextly_sidebar id=”s3wateLxic5DKuwMTiRI57OKeC3SlFPA”]Mr. Agyepong who was reacting to the recent brouhaha surrounding the party’s Monday’s steering committee meeting, discounted claims that he is set on destroying the largest opposition party in Ghana.

He narrated that “Nana Addo and I spoke for 45 minutes last Sunday. We are on very good terms and I gave him my piece of mind. We met about four times last week. He is someone I have served for a long time.”

“When he needed help as a presidential candidate in 1998…some of us had the courage to support and travel with him across the country so he knows what I have done for him,” he added.

An aggrieved Agyepong insisted that “some people are bent on causing a rift between the two of us because they don’t want us together so anytime they see that Nana Addo and I are getting close, then they start spreading lies about me.”

According to him, Nana Addo can attest to the cordial relationship that exists between them, adding that he is in no way destroying the party.

Steering committee meeting could have waited

The NPP General Secretary disclosed he had a call at 10 am on Monday; he was informed about the emergency steering committee meeting scheduled for 3pm.

He however suggested that the meeting should be rescheduled until both he and the party chairman return on Tuesday.

According to him, he made that suggestion because the issues tabled for discussion were not that urgent.

Furthermore, he could not have made it to Accra by 3pm for the meeting because he was in Nkoranza for his in-law’s funeral and his wife needed his presence and support.

He said: “My in-law had passed away and you know that in Ghana, if your in-law dies, you are supposed to help your spouse. I was in Nkoranza and they called me that there is an emergency meeting.”

“I told them that the issues they want to discuss at the meeting is not urgent and also at 10 am on Monday, I will not be able to come to Accra but if they give me 24 hours, by that time, the chairman will be in Ghana then we can discuss whatever issue there is to discuss. They didn’t agree to my suggestion and they went ahead and had the meeting.”

“That after Monday’s meeting the party chairman, Paul Afoko arrived in Ghana at 12 o’clock on Tuesday while he also returned from Kumasi at 1:25 on Tuesday. This meeting could have waited for Tuesday at 3 o’clock and all of us would have been present,” he argued.

Kwabena Agyepong also stated that he had the approval of the national council of the party regarding the implementation of the controversial waiver he granted some parliamentary aspirants.

“We attended a national council meeting where we agreed on the filing fees, development fees among others and we said that…if somebody wants to be a Member of Parliament but has not been an active member, he or she is required to pay a development fee.”

“I remember that during that national council meeting, the Volta Regional chairman suggested that they are a very weak region and that the CHC 10,000 is too much for somebody who may eventually not win the elections so at least there should be a waiver.”

“But I responded that his suggestions were valid but since the council has already agreed on the matter, exempting one region will give rise to similar demands from the other regions. So I gave a suggestion that we should implement the waiver case by case so that if someone has the desires to contest and is in an exceptional circumstance, if he or she petitions us, we will make a decision on the merit of the petition.”

Following this agreement, Agyepong said he wrote to all constituency executives but some persons within the NPP leaked the letter to disgrace him.

Kwabena Agyapong was convinced that there are deliberate attempts to denigrate him as well as the national party Chairman, Paul Afoko.

“Some people deliberately want to disgrace me and the party chairman because whatever is happening in the party, I don’t understand,” he said.

He observed that there have been some “engineering in the media and people fabricating stories that I am destroying the party – why?”

“To go into the media and use our own communicators to attack your party chairman and your general secretary – what kind of attitude is that? It is very bad. I have defended myself that these stories are untrue yet they are determined to destroy me.”
