The Chairman of the Civil Society Platform on oil and gas, Dr Stephen Manteaw has disclosed that the deal between Ghana and Karpowership, the company contracted to build a power barge to ease the current power crisis in the country will last for ten years.

[contextly_sidebar id=”MRWo07wGSXe1MyUUaEVhfh6xm6Y9dG7B”]He said the deal only gives the country a temporary relief and should not be viewed as a long term solution.

Karpower has promised to send one out of the two contracted power barges into the country by September.

The power barge will provide about 225 Megawatts of power for the country.

In an interview with Citi News, Dr. Manteaw warned that the 10-year period only gives Ghana time to work on ways of addressing the countries power challenges.

He further warned that failure to find a lasting solution to the worsening power crisis could have dire consequence on the country after the agreement expires.

“What we entered with Karpowership is a kind of arrangement that gives us a breather for ten years to sought out our electricity problems,” he said.

Dr. Manteaw suggested that “we need to pay a lot more attention to what steps we are taking as a country to deal with our energy problems on a more sustainable basis because Karpower will be here for only ten years after that they will go away. So if within that ten years and we don’t solve our generation problem then we are going to go back into this Dumsor again after ten years.”
