President John Dramani Mahama has expressed Government’s interest in collaborating with the Ghana Institution of Engineers (GHIE) to resolve what he calls huge sanitation and flooding problems facing the nation.

Parts of the country usually flood after it rains despite various measures adopted to curb the menace, which are often accompanied by sanitation-related diseases.

Lives and property worth millions of Ghana cedis are lost annually due to the periodic flooding in cities and towns across the country.

In a meeting with the leadership of Ghana Institution of Engineers, President Mahama tasked the engineers to spearhead innovative means to deal with the problem.

He said: “I believe that the Ghana Institution of Engineers can come up with suggestions to government to how we can better create and engineering solution to this huge sanitation issue we face.”

“I will take say the perennial flooding we face…if you have a mountain range, which is the Akuapim range and you have several rivers and streams taking their source from the mountain range and heading towards the sea and you come and build a capital city between that mountain an the sea, definitely you will have problem with flooding. Unless you have an engineering solution that is able to either divert some of the streams or create dedicated pathways for them.”

“So looking at Accra and flood situation and trying to see whether we can get engineering solutions to it is something you institution can help us with,” President Mahama told the engineers.

Mahama bemoans disasters

In another development, President Mahama bemoaned the nation’s inability to enforce its building codes, which to him has led to collapse of several building.

Some buildings including the Achimota Branch of Melcom and a hotel near Nii Boi Town collapsed last two years and last year respectively due to their poor structural integrity.

President Mahama however tasked the engineers to spearhead innovative means to deal with these looming disasters since some part of the country is in an earthquake zone.

“We all have been told that Ghana sits on a fort line and can experience an earth quake at any time and we therefore has set up certain building codes and standard but unfortunately enforcing them has become a major problem and that’s why we’ve had disasters like the Melcom disaster and there’ve been several more that have occurred. That’s because people are not abiding by the codes.”
