The Convention People’s Party (CPP) has instructed its lawyers to file an application to join a case against commercializing genetically modified (GM) food products being pursued by civil society group, Food Sovereignty Ghana.

[contextly_sidebar id=”dBpvB4lFRorGBOkW4XwGxGhXc4WK3zfh”]The group is seeking an injunction to prevent the national biosafety committee, established under the Biosafety Act from commercializing such food products.

They insist that, the Ministry lacks the authority to do so.

The CPP over the past few years have led a campaign against the passing and implementation of a law which will allow government to legalize GM products in the country.

Speaking to Citi News, chairperson of the CPP, Samia Nkrumah said they are firm in their resolve to protect the larger interest of Ghanaians hence their move.

“We have given our legal team mandate to join Food Sovereignty Ghana in this case. Our lawyers are almost ready and God willing we will be able to join Food Sovereignty,” Samia added.

She explained that “the CPP has taken an interest in this matter because we care about the safety of the Ghana. We have been conducting our own research, interviews, analysis and we’ve come to the conclusion that the plant breeders bill [which seeks parliamentary approval to empower GM products] is not in the interest of Ghana.”
