Former Greater Accra President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Frank Davies, has dismissed claims by Supreme Court Judge, Justice William Atuguba, that the Association has lost its voice and allowed partisan politics to eat deep into its roots.

[contextly_sidebar id=”D18HEvZfPQIUV8vnTw4iDi3uz4rvqlgN”]According to him, no one can independently influence the BAR association to make pronouncements on any matter of national interest.

Justice Atuguba heavily criticized the BAR association for failing in the watch dog role it previously used to play while delivering speech at the University of Ghana Law School’s 42nd week celebration on Monday.

He said: “from the glorious days of the BAR association which stood up consistently and strongly for the rule of law, today the same cannot be readily said. There is a wide spread perception that party politics has eaten into its ranks and clouded its potent militancy.”

In response however Frank Davies in an interview with Citi News insisted that the learned Justice of the Supreme Court who was a former active member of the BAR association should have known that these assertions cannot be factual.

Explaining the processes which takes place before the BAR speaks on national issues; Davis said not a single president or national executive of the BAR “can be clothed with that political inclination and partisanship to speak when matters affecting the state and the economy of the country are concerned.”

According to him, all decisions the BAR takes on issues of national interest are taken at the association’s country meeting which is a collective of all the 10 regional presidents and secretaries.

However, he pointed out that when the decision is that contentious, “it is taken to the generality of the BAR at the BAR conference or we hold a mini conference and take decisions to comment on national issues.”

He thus stressed that the association has not in any way been influenced by partisan politics.
