The National Democratic Party (NDP) has chastised President John Mahama over his plans to increase the number of persons from the Konkomba ethnic group serving in his government.

[contextly_sidebar id=”qiFACRXSBairZ5MVPW4s57AAp5XC9qvp”]The NDP expressed concern that such plans from the President will generate ethnocentrism, as well as promote disunity among the various ethnic groups in the Northern Region.

During his tour of the Northern Region during the Easter holidays last week, the President promised the chiefs and people of Saboba that he has plans of increasing Konkombas serving in his government.

This, he said is in response to various calls from Kokombas that they have very little representation in the Mahama-government.

“I wish to assure you that just be patient. I am going to rectify that situation and make sure that you are properly represented in this government,” he promised.

The Communication Director of NDP, Ernest Owusu Bempah in an interview with Citi News described the move by the President as unconstitutional.

“If you want to go by the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana, when you read the directive principles of state policy, it talks about the unity and togetherness that the President has to promote as the leader of the country. You should make sure you foster unity among ethnic groups to make sure that everybody becomes one,” he said.

He described the President as very “divisive and ethnocentric than any other person you can find in this country.”

Owusu Bempah urged Ghanaians to condemn the President’s utterances which have the tendency to cause chaos.

“…one day and he will say something that will plunge this nation into chaos and we must be very careful because he is continually violating the constitution of the Republic of Ghana which he swore to protect…the President must be called to order.”
