Former Rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Professor Stephen Addai has eulogized late former Prime Minister of Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew, describing him as one of the most intelligent persons the world has ever seen.

Lee Kuan Yee, the statesman who transformed Singapore from a small port city into a wealthy global hub died on Monday morning at age 91 at Singapore General Hospital.

He was widely acknowledged as the founding father of Singapore.

Sharing his thoughts in an interview on the Citi Breafast Show, Prof Addai said Lee Kuan Yew was one who did not allow the odds of life to pull him back in his quest to transform Singapore.

“Lee Kuan Yew was described as among the three most intelligent people in the world by a leading person in America. He was very intelligent; he was committed to the transformation of his country. Unlike most African leaders, his goal was not personal, or family or personal aggrandizement, but to move his country from the third world to the first world and he achieved it and today, Singapore is among the three best places to live in, in the whole world. This is the man the world has lost,” said Prof. Addai.

The former rector further added that Lee Kuan Yew achieved such great fete because “he was positively nationalistic, he was committed to the transformation of his country, he didn’t allow himself to be sidetracked, he put in policies which he also was capable of changing them as time requires.”

The founding father of Singapore transformed the city state from a malaria-infested backwater into one of the first Asian Tiger economies.

He created an efficient government with little corruption, cracked down heavily on crime, built a first-class education system and attracted foreign companies with low taxes.

He was also viewed as authoritarian who used Draconian tactics to clamp down on free speech and any sign of dissent.

Some of his political rivals were jailed without trial for decades and brought defamation lawsuits against journalists and opposition politicians for daring to stand up to him.

When asked why he trampled on individual freedoms and freedom of the media to achieve his ends he retorted that Freedom of the press, freedom of the news media, must be subordinated to the overriding needs of the integrity of Singapore.

For his part, lecturer at Ashesi University, Professor Lloyd Amoah said Lee Kuan Yee used his skills to “…new novel ideas in terms of how to run the country and the results are undoubtedly stunning.”
