Pressure group, OccupyGhana has charged Ghanaians to demand the immediate institution and publication of settlement terms to facilitate retrieval of the GHC 51.2 million paid to Alfred Woyome as judgment debt.

[contextly_sidebar id=”Fd35OuDBwybKGDUQUHkK4MOSNbigXKzo”]A statement from the group said it was of the firm believe that the Attorney-General has been unable to retrieve the money which the Supreme Court ordered to be refunded because the AG’s Law Firm was a beneficiary of the judgment debt through her clients.

The money, according to OccupyGhana could have been used to provide the much needed logistics the Auditor General is asking for to be more effective.

It said it could also have been used to “build more schools to replace the schools under trees; equip the police and other security services to work efficiently; buy generators for hospitals where human lives are being lost because of #dumdum; motivate our hardworking doctors /teachers and other civil servants to perform better and be rewarded accordingly; etc.”

Woyome was last week acquitted and discharged by an Accra High Court on all two counts of causing financial loss to the state and defrauding by false pretence.

OccupyGhana however says it is fully convinced that the recent acquittal and discharge of Mr. Woyome from criminal prosecution is due to the “half-hearted prosecution mounted by the State and this calls into question the Attorney-General’s self-interest and commitment to duty.”

The AG has filed an appeal and has also served notice it will recover every single dime which was wrongfully paid to Woyome.

According to them, it is time Ghanaians forced the government to move beyond the “mere talk-shop in the fight against corruption and commitment to good governance.”

Find below the full statement from OccupyGhana

OccupyGhana notes with great displeasure the declining state of affairs in the country coupled with the insensitivity and lacklustre attitude of the leadership of country and some public servants (manifested in the form of the #deadgoatsyndrome) to solving the many critical challenges that bedevil the nation.

These challenges include, but are not limited to the Government’s inability or unwillingness to move beyond a mere talk-shop in the fight against corruption and commitment to good governance.

OccupyGhana, having closely followed proceedings in the Woyomegate scandal and the matters arising therefrom, strongly believes that the half-hearted prosecution and inability to retrieve monies aside, it is a cardinal principle of democratic governance that a person must not put herself or be put in a position where her public duty is in conflict with her personal interest.

The Attorney-General has been implicated in the ‘Woyome et al’ judgment debt saga.

It has also come to light that the Attorney-General’s Department did in fact leak certain documents to the beleaguered businessman to aid him secure his acquittal.

OccupyGhana is fully convinced that the recent acquittal and discharge of Mr. Woyome from criminal prosecution is due to the half-hearted prosecution mounted by the State and this calls into question the Attorney-General’s self-interest and commitment to duty.

OccupyGhana believes that the Attorney-General has also been unable to retrieve an amount of 51.2 million Ghana Cedis wrongfully paid by the State to Mr. Woyome as judgment debt because her Law Firm was a beneficiary of the judgment debt through her clients.

GHC51,200,000 can provide the logistics the Auditor General is asking for to be more effective; build more schools to replace the schools under trees; equip the police and other security services to work efficiently; buy generators for hospitals where human lives are being lostbecause of #dumdum; motivate our hardworking doctors /teachers and other civil servants to perform better and be rewarded accordingly; etc.

Fellow Ghanaians, sitting on the fence and refusing to act is no longer an option if we truly desire a drastic change in leadership direction. Let us all wear our red voices and clothing to occupy hearts and minds in order to demand what is just.

In line with our mission of occupying hearts and minds to make Ghana work, OccupyGhana calls on all well-meaning Ghanaians to observe a RedFriday tomorrow Friday 20th March 2015.

We are asking all Ghanaians to wear our bold and loud voices in red, and be clad in Red Friday wear preferably made in Ghana as a sign of our commitment to demand the immediate institution and publication of settlement terms to facilitate retrieval of the 51.2m GHs from Alfred Woyome.

Let us occupy hearts and minds because we know that Ghana will work again.

We Occupy for God and Country just because we love Ghana and acknowledge it is the only place we can truly call home.
