The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Economic Community of Central African States (ECAS) has scheduled a joint summit to map up strategies to fight the militant Boko Haram group which has become a menace the sub-region.<\/p>\n
The summit will be held on April 8, \u00a0in one of the ECAS member states.<\/p>\n
[contextly_sidebar id=”iHDNdkX1Gt5DLFsakB5l8C47az5HdtvJ”]The agreement was reached after a meeting between President John Mahama and his Chadian counterpart General Iddris Deby at the Peduase lodge near Aburi.<\/p>\n
Among the issues discussed was the need to form a multinational taskforce to fight Boko Haram. Chad, Cameroon and Nigeria have suffered greatly due to the insurgency of Boko Haram.<\/p>\n
The Chairman of ECOWAS, President Mahama said \u201cThe Chairs of the two sub regions two sides agreed to coordinate the consultation between the two sub regions. Following our deliberations it\u2019s been agreed that the end of the second of week April we hold a joint summit between the two regional economic blocks thus ECOWAS and ECAS at a venue to be decided in Central Africa. We will discuss principally, issues to do with security and Boko Haram.\u201d<\/p>\n
“I express appreciation on behalf of ECOWAS and on our behalf for the role Chad is playing in the fight of Boko Haram. And also for the role Chad is playing in stabilising the situation in Mali.”<\/p>\n
President Mahama indicated that Ghana and Chad will soon set up a joint commission to foster health bilateral relationship adding that \u201cwe also discussed issues of bilateral interest. We agreed that as soon possible our two Foreign Ministries should engage to set up a permanent joint commission for cooperation that will become frame work for cooperation for Ghana and Chad. I believe that there many things that we can do together. I want to thank my guest and my brother for this visit.\u201d<\/p>\n
The President of Chad and the Chairman of ECAS, General Iddris Deby said it was necessary for a joint task force to fight the Boko Haram menace. Speaking through an interpreter, indicated that though the meeting was a short one it was fruitful. According to him the meeting touched the focal point on the issues of security and Boko Haram and how best the two blocks can wipe the insurgency out in the sub region.<\/p>\n
He added that, \u201csingle handedly no country can fight Boko Haram. This means we have to join forces to work together and get rid of Boko Haram.\u201d<\/p>\n
