The National Democratic Party (NDP) has taken a swipe at the Bureau of National Investigation (BNI) for its seeming lack of interest in pursuing senior government officials who allegedly connived with Alfred Woyome to defraud the state.

According to NDP, the BNI’s posture in the GHȻ51.2 million judgment debt scandal is questionable and not in the best interest of the state.

[contextly_sidebar id=”4B7zyuG90GJHq0TGuHwbqdqEtFyXQGvE”]The Communication Director of NDP, Ernest Owusu Bempah in an interview with Citi News questioned why the alleged government officials have not been picked up for questioning by the BNI after Woyome threatened to mention names of some beneficiaries.

“Woyome said he is going to mention names…? Why didn’t they go after Woyome when he said he was going to mention names? What is the BNI there for?” he fumed.

After being acquitted and discharged by an Accra High Court last week after being charged on two counts of causing financial loss to the state and defrauding by false pretense following the payment of GHC 51 million to him as judgment debt, there have been intensified calls for the state officials who authorized the payment of the money to be prosecuted.

The Attorney General has filed an appeal but it is unclear whether the said government officials will be called to testify this time.

The Attorney General and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government have been accused of working to free Mr. Woyome of all the charges leveled against him since he is a financier of the party.

The leadership of the NDC has come out to dismiss these reports but the NDP’s Owusu Bempah is certain that “there is a conspiracy somewhere.”

According to him, “nobody in government can tell me that Woyome spent that money alone.”

Owusu Bempah argued some persons including himself were picked up by the BNI for questioning when they commented on the matter, hence people who are alleged to be directly involved should be pursued.

“I made an allegation against certain groups of people in high places including the former first lady of the Republic benefiting from Woyome. There and then, I was picked up and my human right was infringed upon,” he said.

He continued saying, “why did he come out to say he will mention names? Where is the Yaw Donkoh’s and those people picked me up?”

Bempah remarked that the BNI’s lack of interest in the case is a “matter of gross ineptitude and lack of professionalism when it comes to the security agencies.”
