A total of 5,000 young men and women have been employed under the Youth Employment Agency (YEA) programme as Coastal Sanitation Workers.

According to the Deputy Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Baba Jamal, the coastal sanitation module would fill the unemployment gap as well as ensure the day to day cleaning and protection of the country’s shorelines.

Speaking at a ceremony to launch the project at Tapa Abotoase in the Volta Region, the Deputy Minister said the coastal workers would be engaged in planting trees to serve as wind breaks as well as keep the shores tidy.

The CEO of YEA, Komla Bechem, said some Forts and Castles have been identified for renovation. Some coastal workers would be employed to serve as tour guides at the sites.

Thirty-Nine (39) historical castles and forts have also been identified along Ghana’s Atlantic coast. The Youth Employment Agency is planning collaboration with Ghana Museum Authority, to use the coastal sanitation workers to clean, paint and upgrade them to become tourist sites,” he said.

The Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Benita Sena Okity-Duah, who was present at the launch, said her ministry has taken keen interest in improving the sanitary conditions in various fishing communities in the country as fishes contribute largely to Ghana’s foreign exchange.

The Volta Regional Minister, Helen Ntosu, also encouraged the recruits to work diligently to ensure that conditions on the coastlines meet international standards.

Some of the beneficiaries who spoke to Citi News expressed their joy for the job opportunity.
