Dance hall artiste Samini went bonkers live on Takoradi-based Empire Radio recently.

On the show, a lady called in and said she had met Samini at the National Theatre last year, exchanged contacts, planned meeting up but later Samini blocked her phone number.

Befuddled by the statements, Samini asked who she was and whether he had proposed love to her.

When she responded in the affirmative, Samini called her “witch” only to have realised in the end that it was musician Becca he had been speaking to.

Apparently, this was a prank that the host, Feeling Daddy and Becca planned to pull on Samini.

The Bolgatanga Magistrate court, on Thursday 28th June, granted the Chief of Pelungu, Naab Sierig Sore Sobil IV bail, a Ghc10,000 with two sureties after charges of conspiracy to commit murder in the killing of a 67-year-old Yenboka Kenna.

Yenboka Kenna, a mother of four, was accused of being a witch and was subsequently lynched on 29th of May, at the Pelungu market in the Nabdam District of the Upper East Region.

[contextly_sidebar id=”5Peev5K49PGHRvMwpdT3JsNt8vaJ9LXA”]Five suspects, namely Gbambil Sore, Kofi Pale, Mba Sore, Timbila Sore and Samuel Sore, were arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit murder and murder.

The suspects were arraigned before the Bolgatanga magistrate court on the 13th of June 2017, but Gbambil sore was granted bail by the Bolga high court on health grounds, while the four were remanded. But the chief, Naab Sore, who was also a suspect at the time was attending a programme in Geneva Switzerland, and thus could not appear in court.

Upon arrival from Geneva, Naab Sore was arraigned before the Bolga magistrate court together  with the five other suspects on the second hearing of the case.

Counsel for Naab Sore, Rockson Akugri, argued that, where the deceased was lynched was far beyond the chief’s palace and thus the chief could not detect the lynching of the deceased nor be part of the murder.

He added that, Naab Sore is innocent until evidence adduced sufficiently and proven beyond reasonable doubt says otherwise. He thus prayed the court to bail his client.

The Magistrate court presided over by His Worship Osman Abdul-Hakin, granted Naab Sore bail of GHC10,000.00 with two sureties.

However Gbambil Sore continues to serve his bail granted by the Bolga high court while the remaining four accused suspects remain in police custody.

The case has thus been adjourned to 12th July 2017.

Brief facts of the case

According to the prosecutor, Inspector Gilbert Boteng Addea, “The deceased, Yenboka Kenna, a widow of four children on Sunday 28th May, 2017, closed from Church and went to the Pelungu market to transact business at a shed where she plaits hair for living; but around 5:00pm, she was accused of being a witch, and was escorted to the Pelungu chief’s palace where she was interrogated by the chief and his elders.”

He added that, “in the course of interrogation, words went around the village and attracted a huge crowd at the chief’s palace, so two brothers of the deceased were informed about the incident and reported at the chief’s palace.

The chief interrogated the deceased for over 4 hours, and asked the brothers of the deceased to take her home; but they pleaded with the chief to allow the deceased pass the night at the palace because of the behavior of the irate crowd, who were bent on attacking the deceased.”

But the chief said his palace was not a witch camp, and thus released the deceased to her brothers to take her home.

But they were confronted by the irate crowd, and could not save the deceased. The woman was found dead the following day with multiple injuries on the head and deep cuts on both legs.

The Member of Parliament for the Nabdam Constituency, Dr. Mark Nawaane, has called on the Upper East Regional Police Command to prosecute persons complicit in the lynching of a 67-year old woman, who was accused of being a witch at Yenboka Kenna, a town in Pelungu in the Nabdam District of the Upper East Region.

The Bolgatanga Police Command is currently investigating the circumstances under which the widow was lynched, and has five suspects in its custody.

[contextly_sidebar id=”36PLVlFIHcrFAiWFlIoXOR40z9FHJTU0″]While police say investigations to unravel the mystery is ongoing,  five suspects are standing trial at the Bolgatanga Magistrate court for their alleged roles in the incident.

According to the Nabdam legislator, any undue influence on the Police will compromise justice for the deceased.

Speaking to Citi News after a visit to the family of late Yenboka Kenna , Dr. Nawaane intimated that, the Police should resist any form of external influence from the public in seeking justice for the deceased.

“My sincere condolences to the bereaved family and that this should be the last time this calamity should happen in Nabdam. I will categorically deny my involvement  in trying to influence the ongoing  investigations by the Police. This is a murder case and we wish the Police work independently without any external influence, like the MP and any other person or group of persons trying to influence the Police to carry out their investigations.”

Dr. Nawaane however appealed to the justice delivery institutions to expedite action quickly.

“We wish that the Police will expedite action to bring the perpetrators to book; but at the same time no innocent person should suffer and we should be very careful in trying to get her killers not to have other Nabdams’ who are innocent to suffer” he stated.

In court on Tuesday, the prosecutor, Inspector Gilbert Boteng Addae, prayed the court to remand the suspects into police custody to enable the them complete their investigations into the matter.

He argued that, the suspects to some extent had knowledge about the occurrences of events leading to the lynching of the deceased, but were only willing to give information on the condition that, the chief of Pelungu Naab Sebil Sore (IV) returns from Geneva where he is currently attending a program.

He added that, the suspects may interfere in investigations if granted bail, and thus prayed the court to remand them into police custody for two weeks.

The Prosecutor narrated that “the deceased Yenboka Kenna, a widow of four children on the 28th May, 2017, closed from Church and went to the Pelungu market to transact business at a shed where she plaits hair for living; but around 5:00pm, she was accused of being a ‘witch’ and was escorted to the Pelungu chief’s palace where she was interrogated by the chief and his elders.”

The deceased was found dead the following day with multiple injuries on the head and deep cuts on both legs,” the prosecutor added.

However, counsel for the suspects, Anthony Namoo, prayed the court to admit to bail the first suspect Gbambil Sore based on grounds of ill-health.

He also questioned why the fifth suspect, Samuel Sore, an employee of the Controller and Accountant Generals Department, who resides and works in Bolga, and was not home (Pelungu) on the day the incident occurred; but was only arrested the following day could have been remanded.

But the Magistrate court presided over by His Worship Osman Abdul-Hakin, denied the request, and remanded the five suspects into police custody to enable police complete their investigations.

The case has thus been adjourned to the 28th of June, 2017.

The Upper East Regional Police Command has confirmed the arrest of three persons in connection with the lynching of a 67-year-old woman accused of being a witch.

The deceased, Madam Yenboka Kenna, a widow, was killed at the Pelungu market on Monday, May 29, 2017.

[contextly_sidebar id=”6DQhlIALf4OUGtOxxrXXilYTXm9h9wwD”]The Regional Police Commander, DCOP Vincent Redeemer, told Citi News that the police cannot prove whether those arrested were directly involved in the lynching, but  they are currently assisting the police in investigation.

He said while conducting the investigations in the village where the incident happened, some young men came in to stop a witness from giving information to the police investigation, hence were picked up.

He said the police was hopeful they could help them identify those who carried out the murder.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Tindongo, the community where the deceased hails from, Tindong-Raan Sapana, has said that his attempts to gather more information about the crime have proven futile.

He said although the Pelungu chief has denied knowledge of the incident, he has instructed his people not to take revenge over the murder of the woman.

Tindong-Raan Sapana, however said there is very little he could do to seek justice for the deceased, since the husband and family of the deceased have not formally informed him of the death, and what they want to be done in connection with the incident.

Family of lynched ‘witch’ blames Pelungu chief

The family of the woman who was lynched on Sunday, May 28, has partly blamed the Chief of Pelungu, where the woman was killed for the incident.

According to an elder of the family, Tibil Nyaabil, this murder would have been prevented if the chief of Pelungu, Naab Sierig Sore Sobil (IV) had accommodated her in his palace until the mob had dispersed.

The debate over what has become known as mob  justice, has been rekindled following the gruesome murder of a military officer, who was mistaken for an armed robber.

The security agencies have vowed to deal ruthlessly with perpetrators of such crimes to ensure that the canker is entirely eliminated.
