Following a number of requests from listeners, the Effective Living Series has been extended to the end of January.

The first of the final three sessions, on today’s edition of the Citi Breakfast Show, featured a discussion on “fighting until you win” in whatever situation or opportunity life presents to you.

Business turnaround specialist, management consultant and author, Caleb Ayiku brought an insightful angle on making the best of any situation while ensuring that negative attributes which limited a person’s potential are discontinued.

“The first thing to look at when fighting until you win is potential. Every human has potential but it is essential to know that in as much as you have potential, there are predators designed to prey on your potential. It is up to you to be able to beat your particular predator and win,” he said.

Mr. Ayiku noted eight things that limit a person’s potential and stated that it is important that one commits to halting such behaviours in order to maximise their potential.

These eight things, according to him are:

  1. Procrastination
  2. Dissipation of time
  3. Love for pleasure
  4. Addiction
  5. Damaging emotion
  6. Inertia due to failure
  7. Isolation
  8. Self-indiscipline

Mr. Ayiku stated that fighting procrastination is the first step to win adding that “procrastination is simply the tendency to put off actions”.

He said that there are three key pointers to fighting procrastination; spending time alone to plan the action you have to take, setting fewer goals and asking yourself this particular question: ‘If I had time to do just one thing today or one thing this week what one thing should I do?’

The second battle to win Mr Ayiku noted was the ‘Dissipation of time’.

“Time is more precious than money and that is why you must not waste it,” he said.

According to the Ayiku, “time utilization will always make the differences between success and failure,”

He advised that everyone must have simple a time structure in which they create ample time for personal reflection and prayer, for proper nutrition for your body, for building meaningful relationships and for rest.

“These four things will influence your potential more than you can imagine,” he said.

Love for pleasure is something everyone falls victim to, Caleb Ayiku noted, stating that if some of our guilty pleasures are not pursued with caution, they will limit our potential.

“Any uncontrolled urge can totally derail your goals, you’ll lose sight of what is most important,” he said.

Addiction, he said, has taken away great people and stifled their future and career; including the likes of Kiki Gyan, Whitney Huston, Michael Jackson, and many others.

He noted that addiction cannot be fought alone and it is important that you talk to someone about it or get professional help.

Mr. Ayiku out pointed out that damaging emotions like anger, anxiety fear, discouragement, rejection and hatred, if unchecked, can do a lot of damage to your potential of winning.

According to him, all these unhealthy emotions can rob a person of their health, joy and optimism, inertia and energy.

Caleb Ayiku moved on to inertia brought about by failure has locked a lot a people in their misery and “if you don’t make a conscious effort to break free from the inertia due to failure you will never realise your potential and bring your dreams to life.”

“Many people get immobilized, by a failure, by a past incident that did not go too well, but you have to be shaken and get going,” he added.

The next battle is against isolation and no matter how great your potentials are, you cannot achieve them alone, the consultant said.

“There are very few great things that can be done by one person, many great things require a team effort, and many great things require that you team up with somebody to do something to pursue a dream, so what team are you on?” he queried.

Mr. Ayiku concluded by stating that indiscipline kills a lot of great potentials but indiscipline can be curbed if you make a personal commitment to your time, relationships and your resources.

“If you do not put in place the measures, to make sure that you are disciplined in the use of your times, in the people you relate with, and with your resources, 2018 will pass you by and you would not have achieved what you want to achieve,” he said.

The Parliamentary Candidate for the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), in the Komenda Edina Eguafo Abirem (KEEA) Constituency in the Central Region, John Sterlin, is aiming at winning 65% of the valid votes cast on 7th December.

He said he is the best to represent the aspirations of the electorates of KEEA in the next parliament.

John Sterlin, who is contesting the KEEA parliamentary seat for the first time, said he is optimistic of winning the seat, given what he has done for his constituents.

“They are aware of what I have done and what John Sterlin can do to help them when I go to parliament. The teeming unemployed youth would be given jobs and as a fisherman, I would speak on the sustainability of the fishing stock and given this, I believe I am winning 65% votes at the polls,” he posited.

He made these comments in an interview with citifmonline.com, when during his campaign trail over the weekend, where he addressed opinion leaders at Kwanhenkrom, Kissi and Komenda.

He alluded to the fact that, his political career was motivated by his brother in-law Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom.

John Sterling, is a manager at one of Dr. Nduom's Hotels.
John Sterling, is a manager at one of Dr. Nduom’s Hotels.

“You know Dr. Papa Kwesi Ndoum himself is a big motivation and inspiration. If you get know him well you won’t want to follow anybody else in Ghana politics. He is very forthright and a very reliable person who convinced me to be in politic.”

He promised to curb illegal fishing activities in the fishing industry in the area, when voted into office.

He said he would ensure availability of premix fuel for the every fisherman to enhance their fishing expedition especially in bumper seasons.

He added that, an incoming PPP government would build citrus factory in order to enhance the farming communities in KEEA.

“I have seen oranges rotten myself in the constituency because of bad roads and lack of factories to buy the oranges so we would build cottage factories to produce juices for the schools and hotels in Ghana,” he noted.

He said he would be the best choice for the predominantly NDC constituency because he has a better chance than both the candidates of the NPP and the NDC.

“Nana Ato Arthur of the NPP has been the MCE for four years, he was the deputy regional minister for one and half years, and a regional minister for two and half years, and top of that we have given him the Member of Parliament position for four years; what does he haveto show? If he has something to show it would be out there for us to see. And the NDC candidate Samuel Atta Mills where does he comes from? He couldn’t even locate Brenuakyinim a popular village in this constituency. He should go to Ekumfi Otuam and contest there,” he stated.

The KEEA Seat

The KEEA has traditionally been an NDC seat since 1992, until 2004, when Dr. Nduom won it on the ticket of the Convention People’s Party (CPP).

His win was made possibly because of an alliance with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for which reason the party failed to put forward a candidate.

Dr. Nduom left the seat to contest as a presidential candidate in 2008 on the CPP’s ticket.

The seat thus fell back to the NDC with Dr. J.S. Annan as the MP.

However, due to an internal division that saw an Independent Candidate, Dr. Ato Quarshie emerging from the NDC, the party lost the seat to the NPP for the first time, with the incumbent MP, Nana Ato Arthur.

Could PPP win?

Although the PPP as a party has not made any significant gains in terms of votes in elections 2012 in both parliamentary and presidential, the party seems to have a better chance this time round.

The PPP Parliamentary Candidate, John Sterling, is relying heavily on the influence of his in-law Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, whose growing business investments across the country and in the KEEA area, has given jobs to several persons including traditional NDC and NPP members, who have promised to vote for the party.

Residents have also complained about the failure of both the current NDC administration and the previous NPP government to better their lives.

Some constituents also appear to be buying into the PPP’s campaign message to the effect that the NDC’s Candidate, Samuel Atta Mills, brother to the late President Mills, is an alien in the constituency, since he originally hails from Otuam in the Ekumfi constituency.

If these developments are anything to go by, then the PPP, whose candidate is reportedly galvanizing a huge youthful support following the promise of jobs, could pull a big surprise on December 7.

President John Dramani Mahama has said various independent scientific polls clearly show he will win the elections in December.

The President failed to mention which organizations conducted the polls, but said the polling results reflect the feedback from his campaign activities across the country.

Speaking on URA Radio on Wednesday morning after completing his tour of the Upper East Region, the President said he is confident that his party will win the December elections.

“I do think that we have a first chance and I am confident of victory. We have been approaching this very scientifically; we have been doing our own scientific polling and even some of the polling being done by independent people, the numbers are looking great and so I am confident that from what is being done scientifically, plus or minus any margin of error, we will make 50% plus…

“We are looking at issues of concern to people in different regions and so the campaign message is tailored to address the concerns we find in any particular region and the response we have got is very enthusiastic. Wherever we go, I have been warmly welcomed.”

His comment follows a number of online polls which gave the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo, a lead over him.

There won’t be a run off

The President also expressed optimism that there will not be a run-off in this year’s elections.

“I believe that given a second term, people will see far more than we are seeing in this first term; but like I said, I am confident of victory because we will be able to achieve a first round victory.

Asked whether his party would seek the support of smaller parties in the event of a second round, President Mahama said; “It is not in my consideration, there is no event that we will be going into a second round, from what I am saying scientifically, plus or minus any margin of error, we will make 50 % plus.”

The Bolgatanga Senior High School (BIG BOSS) in the Upper East Region, on Sunday emerged winners in the finals of the ‘What Do You Know’ Quiz Competition on the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

They beat three other participating schools to become champions of the 2016 edition of the ‘NHIS Quiz Competition.’

The school put up a forceful performance as they shrugged off competition from their rivals right from the opening round till the end.

The contest hosted by quiz master Dan Afar-Yeboah, was not without excitement, as the schools at some point came neck to neck leaving the audience sitting at the tip of the seats.

Bolga SHS scored 42 points ahead of closest contender, St Francis of Assise Girls Senior High School, who placed second with 33 points. Archbishop Porter Girls Senior High School placed third with 30 points, while the Oti Senior High School took the fourth position with 28 points.

The 2016 NHIS Quiz Competition started with 40 second cycle institutions across the country. The schools were jointly selected by the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the NHIA.

Winners from each of the ten regions of the country were grouped into the northern and southern zones. Two winners each from the zonal competitions qualified to the national final hosted on GBC’s “What Do You Know” platform.

The winner received a trophy and will benefit from a health and sanitation project valued at ten thousand Ghana cedis sponsored by the NHIA. Each of the finalist schools got a TV set, cash prizes and exercise books.

Deputy Chief Executive of the NHIA, Alex Odoi Nartey, told journalists at the event that the quiz competition is just one of the many ways the NHIA is employing to educate the public on the basics of the scheme.

“The quiz competition which normally starts at the regional level through to the zonals and ends in the grand finale as we have witnessed today; is one of the innovative ways the NHIA is using to reach the populace and to educate the general public; especially the younger generation on the NHIS. As you saw during the competition, the students studied widely on the basics of the NHIS and discharged themselves creditably,” Mr Nartey said.

He congratulated all the schools while applauding the winners.

The NHIS has about 11.3 million members, and is a social intervention programme which provides financial risk protection against out-of-pocket healthcare expenditure for all residents in Ghana.

The scheme is currently operational in all parts of the country.
