Adrian Lamo, a computer hacker best known for passing on information that led to the arrest of Chelsea Manning, has died aged 37.

In online messaging conversations, Manning confided in him, describing confidential military material Manning had sent to Wikileaks.

Wikileaks published the video of a US helicopter strike that killed seven people, including a journalist working for the Reuters news agency.

The cause of Lamo’s death, confirmed to the BBC by the Sedgwick County coroner in Kansas, has not yet been made public.

On Facebook, his father Mario wrote: “With great sadness and a broken heart I have to let know all of Adrian’s friends and acquittances [sic] that he is dead. A bright mind and compassionate soul is gone, he was my beloved son.”

Lamo’s own record as a hacker included some high-profile targets, such as Microsoft and the New York Times.

‘Thrust upon me’
Speaking to the Guardian newspaper in 2011, Lamo described his decision to give up Manning as “not one I decided to make, but was thrust upon me”.

Lamo said he would have “lasting regret” if Manning was handed a long sentence.

Manning, known at the time as Bradley Manning, was eventually sentenced to 35 years in prison. However, President Barack Obama later commuted her sentence and she was released in May 2017.

She is now attempting to become the Senator for Maryland, her home state.

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange on Friday described Lamo as a “petty conman and betrayer of basic human decency”.

Donald Trump Jr has released private Twitter correspondence with anti-secrecy website Wikileaks after a US magazine revealed they had communicated shortly before his father’s election.

The Atlantic magazine revealed the organisation had asked Mr Trump Jr for co-operation and information.

The group published leaks of Clinton campaign emails during the election.

Mr Trump Jr’s lawyers handed the Twitter direct messages to congressional investigators.

The congressional inquiry is one of several looking into allegations of Russian collusion and meddling in the US election.

The largely one-sided transcripts show the president’s eldest son replied only a few times to a series of requests from Wikileaks.

In a series of Monday night tweets, Mr Trump Jr played down his contact with the group, referring to his “whopping 3 responses” which he said one of the congressional committees “has chosen to selectively leak. How ironic!”.

Messages show Wikileaks appeared to have first contacted Mr Trump Jr on 20 September, asking if he knew the origin of an anti-Trump website.

He replied the next day saying: “Off the record I don’t know who that is, but I’ll ask around. Thanks.”

The Atlantic alleges he then emailed senior officials including Steve Bannon, Kellyanne Conway and Mr Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner to tell them Wikileaks had made contact.

The correspondence between September 2016 and July this year shows Wikileaks urging his father to share their Clinton files; asking him to supply his tax returns to Wikileaks and advising him to challenge the result if he lost the election.

  • Donald Trump backs Assange over Russia hacking claim

The Atlantic piece points out that while Mr Trump Jr didn’t reply to later messages, timestamps from tweets show instances where he and his father appear to have “acted on its requests” by mentioning or sharing Wikileaks stories shortly afterwards.

  • Unanswered questions from Trump Jnr email saga
  • Trump Jnr’s habit of making headlines
  • Russian ‘cloud’ over the White House

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange has criticised The Atlantic’s story.

He accuses it of selecting messages that were “edited” and failing to show the full context of the conversations.

Mr Assange also said the messages were part of the group’s promotional efforts. “Wikileaks can be very effective at convincing even high-profile people that it is their interest to promote links to its publications,” Mr Assange said in a tweet.

Donald Trump Jr’s lawyer Alan Futerfas told the magazine: “Over the last several months, we have worked co-operatively with each of the committees and have voluntarily turned over thousands of documents in response to their requests.”

“Putting aside the question as to why or by whom such documents, provided to Congress under promises of confidentiality, have been selectively leaked, we can say with confidence that we have no concerns about these documents and any questions raised about them have been easily answered in the appropriate forum.”

US soldier Chelsea Manning has been released from prison after serving seven years for leaking hundreds of thousands of diplomatic cables and military files to Wikileaks.

A US Army spokesperson confirmed to the BBC that she had left Fort Leavenworth military prison in Kansas.

Most of what remained of her 35-year sentence was commuted by then-US President Barack Obama in January.

Her lawyer earlier said she was excited but likely to be “anxious”.

“She’s ready to finally be able to live as the woman that she is,” Nancy Hollander told the BBC. The 29-year-old soldier was born Bradley Manning.

A day after she was sentenced to 35 years in prison in 2013, Manning said she had felt female since childhood and wanted to live as a woman called Chelsea.

“For the first time, I can see a future for myself as Chelsea,” she said in a statement last week ahead of her release. “I can imagine surviving and living as the person who I am and can finally be in the outside world.”

Speaking to the BBC, Manning’s friend, the journalist Glenn Greenwald – who was involved in the publication of leaks from Edward Snowden – said she faced a difficult life outside of prison.

“She’s going to live in a country where the top officials have expressed extreme denunciations of her, condemnations of her, who regard her as a traitor,” he said.

“But the reality is that if you look back at what it is that she achieved, she revealed unquestionable war crimes, her disclosures led to reforms around the world.”

President Obama’s decision to commute her sentence drew criticism from leading Republicans, including Senator John McCain, who called it “a grave mistake”.

‘Back to Maryland’

Manning was convicted of 20 charges in connection with the leaks, including espionage. She was acquitted of the most serious charge, aiding the enemy.

She defended the leaking by saying she had wanted to spark a public debate in the US about the role of the military and US foreign policy, but later apologised for “hurting the US”, saying she had mistakenly believed she could “change the world for the better”.

In January she tweeted that she wanted to move to Maryland after being released, a state where she previously lived.

On Monday she tweeted: “Two more days until the freedom of civilian life ^_^ Now hunting for private #healthcare like millions of Americans =P”.

Manning will remain on active army duty while her military court conviction remains under appeal. She will have healthcare benefits but will be unpaid, the army says.

An online campaign set up by her attorney has raised $150,000 (£115,725) to pay for her living expenses for the first year after her release.

If the appeal is denied, she could be dishonourably discharged from the army, US media say.

Manning was deployed to Iraq as an intelligence analyst when she leaked hundreds of thousands of files to Wikileaks.

Included in those files was video footage of an Apache helicopter killing 12 civilians in Baghdad in 2007, and many sensitive messages between US diplomats.

Manning twice attempted suicide last year at Fort Leavenworth, a male military prison.

She also went on a hunger strike last year, which she ended after the military agreed to provide her with gender transition treatment.

Transcripts of private speeches by US Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton have been released by the whistle-blowing site Wikileaks.

In one of the extracts, Mrs Clinton told bankers that they were best-placed to help reform the US financial sector.

She also said she favoured “open trade and open borders”. Mrs Clinton’s main opponent, Donald Trump, has said he wants to renegotiate key trade deals.

Mrs Clinton had refused to publish the transcripts, from 2013 and 2014.

Her rival in the Democratic primaries, Bernie Sanders, had repeatedly called on her to release the text of her speeches, which are thought to have earned her about $26m (£21m).

‘Dream of a common market’

The excerpts include comments made at an event sponsored by Goldman Sachs in October 2013 in which Mrs Clinton spoke of the need to consult Wall Street over financial reform.

“The people that know the industry better than anybody are the people who work in the industry,” Mrs Clinton said.

At another speech presented to a Brazilian bank in 2013, she spoke of her “dream” for a common trade market.

“My dream is a hemispheric common market, with open trade and open borders, some time in the future with energy that is as green and sustainable as we can get it, powering growth and opportunity for every person in the hemisphere,” Mrs Clinton said.

The leak comes after the US accused Russia of a cyber attack against political organisations intended to influence the presidential election.

Supporters of Donald Trump had been hopeful that Wikileaks would release an “October Surprise” this week to put an end to Mrs Clinton’s presidential hopes.

Campaign staff are believed to have been sent Mrs Clinton’s speeches to identify passages that could be potentially problematic if they became public, AP news agency reports.

Wikileaks posted thousands of emails, including exchanges with her campaign aide John Podesta. The release covers messages dating back years but also features some from as recently as last month.

Mr Podesta referred to the disclosures as a Russian hack, suggesting some of the documents may have been altered.

“I’m not happy about being hacked by the Russians in their quest to throw the election to Donald Trump,” Mr Podesta wrote. “Don’t have time to figure out which docs are real and which are faked.”
