West Bromwich Albion have parted company with manager Alan Pardew after eight successive league defeats.

The 56-year-old was appointed on 29 November after the Baggies sacked Tony Pulis following a run of 10 Premier League games without a victory.

A 2-1 home defeat by Burnley on Saturday left bottom club Albion 10 points from safety with six games left.

Coach Darren Moore has taken over the first-team and is likely to stay in charge for the rest of the season.

Pardew has become the 10th permanent manager in the Premier League to leave his post this season, which is a joint record along with the 2013-14 campaign.

The Baggies’ statement read: “West Bromwich Albion and Alan Pardew have agreed to mutually part company following discussions between both parties.

“Assistant head coach John Carver will also be leaving.

“The club would like to thank Alan and John for their efforts and wish them well in their future endeavours.”

Pardew, a former team-mate of West Brom technical director Nick Hammond, was the club’s sixth manager since 2011.

West Brom won just once in 18 league games under him, taking only eight points from a possible 54.

They are in their eighth successive Premier League season but have taken only 20 points from their 32 matches this campaign.

Pardew’s previous job in the Premier League was with Crystal Palace, who sacked him in December 2016 with the club 17th in the table.

West Bromwich Albion’s troubled week continued as Southampton scored in each half to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 2005.

Albion were looking to move on from an incident in which four senior players were interviewed by police after a taxi was stolen from outside a fast-food restaurant in Barcelona.

But the fifth-round tie started badly for the hosts when Saints centre-back Wesley Hoedt took advantage of slack defending to guide home James Ward-Prowse’s corner.

Dusan Tadic’s sublime chip seemed to put the game beyond the Baggies, only for Salomon Rondon’s stunning volley to restore their hopes seconds later.

Alan Pardew’s side, who are bottom of the Premier League, rallied as the home fans continued to provide their backing and Ahmed Hegazi’s scuffed volley against the bar almost rewarded their support – despite the circumstances – with a late equaliser.

Southampton will discover their last-eight opponents when the draw is made at 20:00 GMT on Saturday.

Mixed reception for Baggies duo
Albion pair Gareth Barry and Jonny Evans have made over 1,000 top-level appearances between them
West Brom defender Jonny Evans and midfielder Gareth Barry started the tie – just 60 hours after being involved in the late-night incident in the Spanish city on Thursday.

The pair, along with reserve goalkeeper Boaz Myhill and midfielder Jake Livermore, were interviewed but not arrested by police after allegedly driving the taxi back to their hotel without the driver at about 05:30 GMT.

The quartet issued an apology for breaking the club curfew on Friday.

With Myhill on the bench and Livermore missing because of injury, the focus fell on Evans and Barry as Pardew decided to play them against Southampton – though the former was replaced as captain by fellow defender Gareth McAuley.

When their names were read out as being in the starting line-up, they were greeted with a mixture of cheers and boos.

Some frustrated Albion fans booed when Barry sloppily gave away possession at the start of the second half, while a few more jeers were audible when the former England international was replaced after 72 minutes.

But, overall, it would be harsh to criticise the commitment of each player as they tried to win back the faith of their suffering supporters.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes referee Mike Dean “did not see” the incident that led him to award a late penalty to West Brom in the Gunners’ 1-1 draw at The Hawthorns.

The visitors were on course for three points after Alexis Sanchez’s 83rd-minute free-kick beat Baggies goalkeeper Ben Foster via a big deflection off James McClean in the wall.

But, with a minute of normal time remaining, Calum Chambers was judged to have handled as Kieran Gibbs tried to nudge the ball past him in the area.

Jay Rodriguez fired the resulting spot-kick past Petr Cech to earn the struggling hosts a point.

Wenger said: “Many years ago [former Arsenal vice-chairman] David Dein and myself fought hard for referees to become professional and they do a good job, but don’t work enough.

“We have a very difficult schedule and I believe we fought hard to win the game, but didn’t because of a bad decision.

“[Dean] didn’t see it. There was a player in front of him. That’s why I questioned his decision, he didn’t see it.”

Match of the Day 2 pundits Shay Given and Leon Osman disagreed – saying Dean had a clear view – but both described the decision as “generous”.

West Brom counterpart Alan Pardew acknowledged it was a “fortunate penalty”.

He added: “If I was the opposing manager then I might not have thought it was a penalty.”

Both goals came in a dramatic final 10 minutes of a largely uninspiring game with few clear-cut chances.

Arsenal move three points behind fourth-placed Liverpool while West Brom climb off the bottom of the table on goal difference.

Was it a penalty?

Arsenal defender Calum Chambers protested against Mike Dean’s decision

Arsenal’s players protested both at the time of the decision and after the final whistle, when Cech was booked and Wenger spoke to Dean.

The incident came a day after Southampton defender Maya Yoshida was deemed not to be at fault when he handled the ball against Manchester United, but there was no such good fortune for Chambers.

With Arsenal just moments away from securing victory, former Gunners full-back Gibbs’ attempt to push the ball past Chambers struck the arm of the defender. Chambers had little time to move his arm out of the way, but the referee judged it to be intentional.

That left Wenger and his players aggrieved just minutes after they had taken the lead rather fortuitously when Sanchez’s free-kick took a big deflection off McClean to wrong-foot Foster.

Before that, the visitors rarely troubled the Baggies backline, though Alexandre Lacazette went close twice.

And the late controversy meant they missed the chance to really close on the Champions League places, with a match against second-placed Chelsea to come on Wednesday.

Baggies earn point but lack bounce

West Brom were fortunate to come away with anything from a display that appeared focused on defending.

Before the penalty, only Rodriguez’s second-half strike that stung the palms of Cech had the home crowd off their seats.

It is now no wins in 19 matches for Pardew’s side, equalling the longest such run in the Premier League since Aston Villa’s sequence ended in January 2016.

The Baggies will have another chance to end that run on Tuesday when they play West Ham.

Manchester United survived a late scare to clinch an uninspiring victory at West Brom.

Romelu Lukaku’s 15th goal of the season and Jesse Lingard’s deflected effort sealed a 2-1 win at The Hawthorns.

They were made to sweat after Gareth Barry’s second-half strike but held on, and once again they sit 11 points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City.

Albion at least scored their first goal under Alan Pardew but remain second bottom, now two points from safety after extending their winless league run to 16 games.

They lived dangerously during United’s bright start with former Hawthorns loanee Lukaku, Juan Mata and Marcus Rashford lively but the visitors failed to find an early breakthrough.

But for all their possession United never worried Ben Foster and the Baggies remained comfortable as they sat deep.

There seemed little immediate threat but Lukaku, who scored a hat-trick for Albion against Manchester United in 2013, ended the monotony when he opened the scoring after 27 minutes.

Again it was pedestrian build-up but this time it had an end product as Rashford dug out a cross on the left for Lukaku to out-jump Kieran Gibbs and power in a header from 10 yards.

And it sparked a second as United doubled their lead eight minutes later.

Lukaku and Mata linked up to find Lingard and the England international’s shot from 18 yards was deflected over the helpless Foster by Ahmed Hegazi’s outstretched leg.

With that it was an uphill battle for Albion as they searched for a first win since August.

Jake Livermore at least forced David De Gea into a low save but, as an attacking force, the Baggies were anonymous.

The second half followed the same pattern until Rashford and Hegazi clashed, with the Egyptian defender appearing to push his head into Rashford’s.

Only the United striker was booked for the altercation but he did almost add a third goal after 56 minutes, arrowing a snapshot a yard wide.

It was a rare effort during a drab second half and Rondon summed up Albion’s efforts when he miscued an effort straight at De Gea with 17 minutes left.

But Albion did pull a goal back after 77 minutes when United failed to deal with Chris Brunt’s corner and Barry stabbed in from close range.

It was poor defending from United, who had earlier lost Antonio Valencia to injury, but they held on despite Albion’s late rally.

De Gea and Barry clashed after Barry caught the goalkeeper and Jay Rodriguez headed wide as Albion failed to find a leveller.

West Brom have appointed former Newcastle and Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew as manager.

The Baggies sacked Tony Pulis on 20 November after they went 10 Premier League games without a victory and were a point above the relegation zone.

Pardew, 56, has been out of the game since being sacked by Palace in December 2016.

He has signed a contract until the end of the 2019-20 season, becoming Albion’s sixth manager since 2011.

“I’m thrilled with the opportunity Albion have provided and looking forward to getting to work with what I consider to be a talented group of players,” said Pardew, a former team-mate of West Brom technical director Nick Hammond.

“The immediate challenge will be to get the results we need to pull ourselves up the table.

“But I’m aware that while I’m joining one of the great, traditional clubs of English football, it is one determined to go forward in the Premier League.”

Pardew’s first game in charge will be against Palace in the league at the Hawthorns on Saturday, 2 December (15:00 GMT).

Albion then face trips to Liverpool and Swansea before a home fixture against Manchester United.

John Carver, Pardew’s former assistant at Newcastle, will join the West Brom backroom staff.

Assistant head coach Gary Megson, who took temporary charge following Pulis’ dismissal, has left the club.

Pardew, who has also had spells at Reading, West Ham, Charlton and Southampton in an 18-year managerial career, lost the FA Cup final twice as a manager.

He was named League Managers’ Association Manager of the Year in 2012 after Newcastle finished fifth place in the Premier League.

West Brom chairman John Williams said: “We were impressed with what he had to say and what he has to offer and we are looking forward to an exciting new era under his charge.”

Pardew’s Premier League stats

  • Pardew had a 34.3% Premier League win percentage at Palace, compared to 37.4% at Newcastle, 36.4% at West Ham and 26.3% at Charlton
  • His overall Premier League win percentage is 35.8%
  • With Palace, Pardew became the first Premier League manager to guide a club to a top-half finish after being in the relegation places at Christmas
  • Pardew has managed 302 Premier League games

Pardew’s controversial managerial career

While in charge of West Ham in 2006, Pardew was involved in a confrontation with Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.

In January 2014, he swore at Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini while in charge of Newcastle.

Two months after that, he was fined £100,000 and given a formal warning for headbutting Hull City midfielder David Meyler.

West Bromwich Albion say they are willing to use The Hawthorns as part of a pilot scheme for safe standing.

The Premier League wrote to all 20 top-flight clubs about a trial to re-introduce standing areas, which were banned in 1994.

Albion’s director of operations Mark Miles said: “We would be very keen to be involved.

“It is the same message I have delivered verbally at previous meetings,” he added.

But Miles said that before any scheme can be considered, the case has to be made for legislative change on the grounds of safety.

All-seater stadiums have been compulsory in the top two divisions in England since an inquiry into the 1989 Hillsborough disaster, which claimed the lives of 96 Liverpool fans.

Any change to introduce standing at stadiums in England would need government legislation.

In Scotland, Celtic opened a 2,900-capacity safe standing section last year after the Scottish champions were granted a safe-standing licence by Glasgow City Council.

Miles has visited the rail seating system that has been installed in the north-east corner of Celtic Park.

“There is little doubt that it was clearly welcomed by the supporters as well as creating a unique atmosphere,” he added.

Craig Dawson scored twice as West Brom inflicted a big blow to Arsenal’s hopes of a top-four finish with victory at The Hawthorns.

Dawson capitalised on some awful defending from the Gunners to head both of his goals from corners – the first to give the Baggies the lead, the second to seal their win.

Arsenal had initially rallied after falling behind, levelling through Alexis Sanchez’s close-range finish – the Chilean forward’s 18th goal of the season.

However, they fell behind again 10 minutes into the second half when substitute Hal Robson-Kanu rolled the ball home with only his second touch after coming on.

Arsenal, who lost goalkeeper Petr Cech to injury, were outfought and unable to rally a second time, their challenge wilting soon after Danny Welbeck’s header from a corner struck the crossbar.

It was an eventful encounter, both on the pitch and above it as two planes pulling banners – one pro-Arsene Wenger and the other against the Arsenal boss – made circles around The Hawthorns.

It was the anti-Wenger camp who were most present and vocal by the end, though, holding aloft banners declaring ‘Enough is enough’ and booing their beleaguered manager’s decision to substitute Sanchez with 12 minutes remaining.

Wenger’s future beyond the end of this season remains unknown, but the facts are these – Arsenal trail fourth place by five points (albeit with a game in hand).

They must arrest a run that has seen them win just one of their last five league games if they are to continue their proud record of finishing in the top four in each of Wenger’s 20 seasons at the club so far.

Saido Berahino served an eight-week suspension before leaving West Brom, Stoke City boss Mark Hughes has said.

His comments follow newspaper reports the striker was banned after failing an out-of-competition drugs test.

Hughes said the 23-year-old, who joined the Potters for £12m in January, was banned for a “Football Association disciplinary matter”.

The Welshman said he saw no reason for Berahino not to face his former club at the Hawthorns on Saturday.

Hughes, 53, said the forward had “issues at his previous club for 18 months”, adding: “We were aware of that before we signed him.

“As with all players, we did our research on him before we signed him, but that didn’t change our thinking at all.

“In terms of more detail, you would probably need to refer back to his former club, West Brom. We are pleased with what he is producing and he is looking forward to the game tomorrow.

“Why wouldn’t I play him?” added Hughes. “He is in line to be involved.”

West Brom boss Tony Pulis confirmed Berahino served a ban, but would not comment on why.

“He didn’t play for me because he wasn’t fit enough,” added Pulis. “This football club looked after Saido very well while he was here. The club looks after all the players.

“Saido was one of the main reasons this club stayed in the Premier League two seasons ago. In his own mind he wanted to move.”

The FA said it does not comment on issues regarding doping violations unless they breach the World Anti-Doping Agency code.
