Harvey Weinstein has apologised to Meryl Streep and Jennifer Lawrence after his lawyers used their names in his defence against a legal action.

His lawyers want a class action lawsuit dismissed for being too broad and used favourable quotes from the two stars.

But Ms Streep described the way they used the fact he did not abuse her as “pathetic”, while Ms Lawrence said he had taken things “out of context”.

Mr Weinstein has been accused of sexual misconduct by dozens of women.

He denies all allegations of non-consensual sex.

Six women are suing Mr Weinstein and what they dub the “Weinstein Sexual Enterprise”, which they say includes his brother Bob and their film studio The Weinstein Company. The plaintiffs argue the “enterprise” conspired to conceal Harvey Weinstein’s alleged sexual misconduct.

Many Weinstein Company board members, including Bob Weinstein, have said they did not previously know about allegations of sexual misconduct and assault against Harvey Weinstein.

In seeking to have the lawsuit dismissed, his lawyers argued in a motion that it was far too broad and “would include all women who ever met with Weinstein, regardless of whether they claimed to have suffered any identifiable harm as a result of that meeting.”

They quoted Ms Lawrence as saying in a media interview that the Hollywood mogul had “only ever been nice to me”.

However, they did not mention her adding, “except for the moments that he wasn’t” – times when she said she would confront him verbally.

In a statement Ms Lawrence said: “Harvey Weinstein and his company are continuing to do what they have always done which is to take things out of context and use them for their own benefit. This is what predators do, and it must stop.”

A spokeswoman for Mr Weinstein said he “acknowledges the valuable input both Meryl Streep and Jennifer Lawrence have contributed to this conversation and apologises”.

Mr Weinstein had directed that in the future no specific names of “former associates” be used by his lawyers, the spokeswoman said.

Mr Weinstein’s legal team also used the name of Gwyneth Paltrow in papers filed in New York in an attempt to get the case dismissed.

Ms Paltrow has previously said she feared she would be fired after her then-boyfriend Brad Pitt confronted Weinstein in the 1990s.

But the film producer’s lawyers, Phyllis Kupferstein and Mary E Flynn, wrote: “Paltrow was not so offended that she refused to work with Weinstein again, nor did her career suffer as a result of her rebuffing his alleged advances.”

‘He will pay’

Mr Weinstein’s lawyers cited quotes Ms Streep gave when the Hollywood sexual harassment scandal unfolded, saying he was “respectful with me in our working relationship, and with many others with whom he worked professionally”.

The lawyers did not mention that the actress also said the women who had spoken out against him were “heroes” and his alleged behaviour was “inexcusable” and an “abuse of power”.

In a new statement, Ms Streep said: “Harvey Weinstein’s attorneys use of my (true) statement – that he was not sexually transgressive or physically abusive in our business relationship – as evidence that he was not abusive with many other women is pathetic and exploitative.

“The criminal actions he is accused of conducting on the bodies of these women are his responsibility, and if there is any justice left in the system he will pay for them – regardless of how many good movies, made by many good people, Harvey was lucky enough to have acquired or financed.”

UK police are investigating a number of sexual assault allegations involving Harvey Weinstein, the BBC understands.

The Metropolitan Police says he is accused of assaulting three women in separate incidents in London in the late 1980s, 1992, 2010, 2011 and 2015.

Officers are looking into claims they were attacked in Westminster, Camden and west London.

The Hollywood film producer has “unequivocally denied” any allegations of non-consensual sex.

No arrests have been made over any of the allegations, police say.

New York police are also investigating claims against Weinstein, including rape and sexual assault.

More than two dozen women – among them actresses Angelina Jolie, Gwyneth Paltrow and Rose McGowan – have made a number of accusations against him.

Weinstein, 65, is a huge figure in the film world, where his productions have received more than 300 Oscar nominations and won 81.

On Saturday, the organisation behind the Oscars (the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences) voted to expel Weinstein.

Hollywood figures including Tom Hanks and Whoopi Goldberg sit on its board.

Announcing its decision, the Academy said the “era of wilful ignorance and shameful complicity in sexually predatory behaviour and workplace harassment in our industry is over”.

French President Emmanuel Macron has said he has taken steps to revoke Weinstein’s Legion d’Honneur – the country’s top honour – which he was awarded in 2012.

British actress Lysette Anthony is the latest named star to accuse Weinstein after she told the Sunday Times he attacked her at her London home in the late 1980s.

Anthony says she reported the attack to the Met adding she met the producer in 1982 when she was in sci-fi film Krull and the alleged assault happened a few years later.

It was a “pathetic, revolting” attack, the actress said, that had left her “disgusted and embarrassed”.

The Metropolitan Police said it was passed an allegation of sexual assault, without giving details.

Exploring the casting couch culture of LA

BBC home affairs correspondent Daniel Sandford says detectives have two problems going forward – one will be gathering evidence from the time of these allegations, including an incident from 35 years ago.

He adds the other is that because Weinstein faces allegations in the United States, police will want to deal with that first before agreeing to extradite him to the UK to face any charges against him there.

Meanwhile, Woody Allen has said he had heard rumours about Weinstein but not “these horror stories”, adding he was “sad” to hear about the numerous allegations.

The film-maker later clarified his comments.

“When I said I felt sad for Harvey Weinstein I thought it was clear the meaning was because he is a sad, sick man,” he told Variety.

Harvey Weinstein’s brother has refused to comment on whether the board of Weinstein Company had been aware of settlements with women during recent contract negotiations.
But Bob Weinstein told the Hollywood Reporter he had no idea of “the type of predator” his brother was.

Kate Winslet has revealed she deliberately did not thank Harvey Weinstein when she won her Oscar for The Reader in 2009. “I remember being told, ‘Make sure you thank Harvey if you win,'” the actress told the Los Angeles Times. “And I remember turning around and saying, ‘No I won’t.'”

The British director of Oscar-tipped film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri said he was pleased Weinstein had “got his comeuppance”.

Speaking on the closing night of this year’s London Film Festival, Martin McDonagh said: “Hopefully it’s the start of something better.”

James Corden has apologised for making jokes about the Weinstein affair at a charity gala in Los Angeles.

“I am truly sorry for anyone offended, that was never my intention,” the British talk show host wrote on Twitter.

The Producers Guild of America is to hold a special meeting on Monday to discuss expelling Harvey Weinstein from its ranks.

The Sekondi Takoradi Chamber of Commerce is calling on government to amend the PNDC law 160 that mandates the Ghana Ports and Habour Authority (GPHA) to plan, build, develop, maintain, and operate ports in the country.

According to the Chamber, the seemingly two positions on the development of a third port at Atuabo is as a result of the inconsistencies in the PNDC law 160 which states ‘the Ghana Ports and Harbors authority, GPHA is a statutory corporation established under the Provisional National Defense Council law 160 of 1986 to build, plan, develop, manage, operate and control ports in Ghana’.

The same Act also indicates in section I, 2 and 3 that ‘the port within the limit specified in the schedule to this are hereby declared to be ports for the purposes of this act and any other enactment. The president may by executive instrument vary or extend the boundaries of a port specified in the schedule or of any other port declared in sub section 3.’

Subsection 3 however states “the President may by executive instrument declare that a port, bay, place or inland water shall be a port for the purposes of this act and any other enactment and may define area of the port.”

The Chairman of the Sekondi Takoradi Chamber of Commerce, Ato Vannese, was of the opinion that this is questionable and is therefore proposing that the current GPHA PNDC Law 160 be amended to make the GPHA the sole operator of ports and harbors in Ghana to enable the two ports Tema and Takoradi be on their own as independent companies with independent board of directors and management unit.

Mr Vannese added this will “generate completion between the two harbours, now companies leading to effectiveness, efficiency and also attract the needed investment required of modern ports”
