They were intercepted en route to a Tettegu, also in the area. Citi News reported from the area that police met them men in a green Ford pickup.

The police asked them to stop but the men in the pickup refused to heed the police’s commands leading to an altercation. The military was eventually called in as reinforcements to restrain the men.

Residents in the area lamented that something similar to this happened in 2008, when some land guards were deployed by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to go and snatch ballot boxes from Tettegu, known to be a stronghold of the party.

One of the residents spoke to Citi News and alleged that pickup belonged to Tina Mensah, the NPP Parliamentary candidate for the constituency.

According to the resident, he lived close to Tina Mensah and recognised the pickup.

“That is normally what the NPP people used to do over here. The pickup that came belongs to Tina Mensah, the green pickup with the boys. We know all of them from Weija,” he said.

He narrated further that: “we were here voting and a group of people came in white and the green pickup… they were here to take the printing materials plus the verification machines. That is normally what they do.”

The two main contenders for the seat are the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Tina Naa Ayeley Mensah and the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Obuobia Darko-Opoku.

It all started with allegations that the NDC parliamentary candidate for the constituency has been deceiving voters by unfairly exploiting the incumbency of her party to her advantage.

But Mrs. Darko-Opoku embraced the merits of belonging to the governing NDC saying, “I am the candidate for the ruling party and I will use it to campaign everyday, every night.”

She also argued that the people are not really complaining about how the development comes as long as it comes.

“If you leave on a road for 35 years and that road has never been constructed and you wake up and that road has been never been constructed and you wake up one day and that road has being constructed and is almost finished, you will appreciate it. Do you really care how it came in or not? At least something has been done.”

“Does it really matter who brought it? Does it really matter who lobbied for it? Does it really matter what it is? What it means is that the government has an eye in the constituency and the government is working in the constituency,” The NDC aspirant added.

The NPP’s Tina Naa Ayeley Mensah however said she was not moved by the hasty developmental projects undertaken for votes and vowed to hand Mrs. Darko-Opoku, a humbling defeat in the December polls.

“The fact on the ground is that the people are tired, they are hungry, there are no jobs, and they want work. That is it. They want better development. They don’t want development that will come three months or four months to elections. They want people who are going to be truthful to them,” Mrs. Mensah said.

The Weija-Gbawe seat has been a comfortable one for the NPP in recent years.

However, with the growing dissatisfaction with the performance of the incumbent NPP, MP Rosemond Comfort Abrah, and the exchange of propaganda between the two camps, the uphill challenge for both aspirants, remains an interesting contest to look forward to in the December elections.

Mahama described the philanthropist as “industrious” and the best person who can spearhead development in the constituency as well as champion their interest in parliament.

The former broadcaster has been visible on the ground with developmental projects and donations through her Obuobia Foundation ever since she launched her bid for the second time to stand on the ticket of the governing party.

Last month, she donated an ambulance to the Ga South Municipal Hospital, after giving the same health facility a water storage system to aid in child delivery as well as the construction of bridges, boreholes and connecting some communities in the constituency to the national water pipelines among others.

Introducing Obuobia, who is the deputy Executive Secretary of the Ghana Freezones Board to a teeming crowd of NDC supporters at Mallam Junction, Mahama said he has been impressed with her dedication and passion to help humanity and has no doubt she will be a fine lawmaker.

“I believe that with what we have done, we deserve a second term. We are taking the Weija-Gbawe constituency,” the president said about the ever-smiling MP-aspirant.

“Your parliamentary candidate has done a lot to win your votes. Look at the developmental projects she is fronting. What she has done are more than enough. I have no doubt she will over perform when she becomes an MP. Let’s give her our support because she’ll do things double, double. I have no doubt this year Weija-Gbawe will fall to the NDC party.

“Who wouldn’t be proud to have this beautiful woman as his MP? When you vote on December 7 for me, make sure you cast your ballot for Obuobia Darko-Opoku,” Mahama appealed.

Obuobia took to Facebook to express her gratitude to Mahama for gracing her campaign launch during his Greater Accra regional tour.
“I’m indeed grateful to him for making the Weija-Gbawe constituency a port of call on his campaign tour of the Greater Accra Region. I promise to live up to this trust in me to represent the NDC in my constituency,” she wrote.
