The government is looking to acquire three new material recovery sites for the recovery and recycling of waste in Accra, President Nana Akufo-Addo announced at the Sanitation Campaign launch on Monday.

These integrated material recovery sites are intended to address waste disposal issues in the capital, as the President attempts to fulfill his promise to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa.

[contextly_sidebar id=”HLcRRkuVZwUTaXSqOd8gKIi84K1lVmoy”]These three sites are located at Otinibi, Nsumia Number 3 in the Adoagyiri Municipality, and an unnamed site in the Gbawe-Mallam area.

The 64-acre Nsumia Number 3, is said to be ready for use, having been engineered to meet world standards of integrated material recovery sites that will process recyclable materials to sell to manufacturers as raw materials for new products.

The President noted that, similar initiatives are being considered in other regions to ensure that there are adequate, modern, engineered and environmentally acceptable sites for the processing of waste nationwide.

He said it was government’s intent “to acquire and own these sites, in partnership with the private sector.”

“Management service contracts of these sites will be awarded through a competitive tendering process. This policy will ensure fair play and avoid monopoly,” he added.

Support for environmental service providers

The government will also look to provide assistance to environmental service providers that are responsible for keeping some cities and towns neat and tidy.

“These measures include assisting them with access to credit facilities and defining a tax regime that will enable them to procure new and effective tools for their work.

He added that “Modern, new state-of-the-art trucks and equipment, are of the utmost necessity to deliver on this objective” and relegate the era of broken down trucks and the buying used equipment for sanitation activities to the past.

President Nana Akufo-Addo, as part of the National Sanitation Campaign, announced a National Sanitation Brigade to enforce sanitation laws nationwide.

This brigade, to be made up Ghanaian youth, will police the adherence to the rules and regulations on sanitation in both state and private properties.

The National Sanitation Brigade adds to other initiatives, including the enhancement of operations of tricycle rubbish collectors, and the construction of mini-transfer stations, to improve sanitation and aid the disposal of waste.

There will also be automated sweepers on major streets, that will also be manned and monitored by the Sanitation Brigade personnel.
