The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service is investigating Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) K. Azalekor, for arresting three people in connection with a video in which he engaged in an altercation with Dancehall Artiste, Shatta Wale.

ASP Azalekor of the National Patrol Department (NPD), Accra Region, last Friday arrested one Maame Afua and sent her to the Legon Police Station.

[contextly_sidebar id=”6vlGGH6x13jmkd4LiU03u3k9AppDmikg”]In a video that has gone viral, the self-acclaimed Dancehall King is captured engaging in a hot exchange of words with a policeman at East Legon.

The police officer is seen ordering the artiste and his friends to get into their cars and follow him to the police station.

Shatta Wale, after unsuccessful attempts to persuade the policeman to let him and his friends go, flared up, raining words on the police officer for dealing with a public figure like him in such a manner.

Investigations by The Finder indicate that the senior police officer made a report that on Thursday at about 15:20pm, while on patrol with his team, he had an encounter with Shatta Wale, a popular musician at Mempeasem, near Trinity Theological Seminary, Legon.

According to him, during the encounter, the suspect, Maame Afua, assisted by the daughter of her madam, who is currently on the run, took a video of what transpired at the scene and circulated same on social media.

ASP Azalekor, in his report, said he arrested Maame Afua to inform police for further action.

When contacted, Maame Afua told The Finder that around 3:00pm last Thursday, the policeman stopped a car with a number plate as Shatta 2.

According to her, ASP Azalekor sat in  Shatta Wale’s  car for a while and alighted.

She explained that, minutes later, Shatta Wale came to the scene with his Range Rover and parked it in the middle of the road.

She said discussions between the musician and the police officer turned into heated exchanges, and Shatta Wale drove off and was soon followed by the Shatta 2 car and the police vehicle.

Maame Afua explained that the heated exchanges drew her attention, adding that she came out of a hairdressing salon where she works to witness the altercation between the musician and the peace officer.

According to her, the police officer returned to the scene of the incident the following day to show her a video.

The policeman told her that since she appeared in the video, they are looking for the one who shot the video.

Maame Afua said she told the police officer that she did not take the video but it is possible the video was shot by her madam’s daughter.

She stated that the police drove her to the madam’s house with the intention of arresting the madam’s daughter, but the lady was not home.

She told The Finder that the police then took her to Legon Police Station and detained her and said she would only be released when the one who shot the video is arrested.

The hairdresser said she called her madam, who in turn called Agbeko Kumordzi, a neighbour, to go to the police station to help her.

Kumordzi told The Finder that when he got to the police station, a woman who is a customer of the hairdresser was at the police station seeking why the hairdresser was arrested.

According to Kumordzi, one police officer attempted to assault the lady for insisting to know why the hairdresser was arrested.

He said a taxi driver who drove the lady to the police station prevented the police officer from assaulting the lady.

Angered by the action of the taxi driver, Kumordzi said two police officers corked a pistol and a rifle, pushed the driver to the ground and detained him too.

He said the police officers also detained the woman who was insisting on knowing the rationale behind the arrest of the hairdresser and the taxi driver.

Kumordzi alleged that Azalekor ordered that the persons detained should not be granted bail.

However, he said a crime officer, named Aboagye, who came to the Legon Police Station on monitoring duties, ordered that they be granted bail to report on Saturday.

Maame Afua reported to the police station the following day and one officer accompanied her to the hairdressing shop to inspect where the vehicles in the video were parked during the incident.

Shatta Wale responds

Meanwhile, Shatta Wale has come out with an explanation for his reaction towards the police officer.

The musician, born Charles Nii Armah Mensah Jr., indicated that one of the law enforcement officers called him a rascal, a description he deems very offensive.

Police in the Ashanti Region have picked up three young men believed to have taken part in an alleged gang rape of a teenage girl, a video of which has gone viral on social media.

Many Ghanaians are outraged over the viral video in which about seven young men, were seen forcibly having sex with the teenager.

[contextly_sidebar id=”N3JWjqaPbFr9mcTI5mpYNJQUUBcs83OH”]The video has been circulating on social media for close to 24 hours with the young men taking turns to rape the teenager.

The Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU)  of the Ashanti Regional Police Command has invited the 18-year old victim to assist in investigations.

Citi News sources say the victim is currently at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital undergoing medical examination. The incident occurred at Bantama in Kumasi.

Speaking to Citi News, Assembly Member for the Bantama Electoral area, Kwame Ofori, asked the Police to bring the culprits to book in order to serve as a deterrent to others.

“It is true that the incident occurred, and as the Assembly man, I urge various stakeholders not to take this issue lightly. I am very shocked by this incident because I never thought it could happen. I am following up on this case keenly. I urge the Police Service to take up this matter and thoroughly investigate it. The punishment handed out to the culprits should serve as a deterrent to others.”

Police investigates ‘gang rape’ video, cautions against circulation

The Police say they are on a manhunt to arrest other members of the gang, while investigation into the incident continues.

The National Headquarters of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, indicated in a statement that, it had taken a “serious view” of the incident, and has constituted a special investigative team to look into the matter, and identify the suspects for the necessary legal actions.

The statement also asked various media houses and those in possession of the video to “stop circulating it since it is an offence to circulate such obscene materials.”

“Anybody with any relevant information should personally report to the Cyber Crime Unit of the CID Headquarters for further action,” it added.

GoFundMe has racked up over $4 billion in donations as the world’s biggest platform for people setting up donation campaigns, in part by leveraging the power of social media to get people to share stories around those campaigns, with the biggest of these often going viral. Now, to tap deeper into the estimated $500 million in charitable donations that are made globally each year, the company is adding a new feature into the mix as it looks to tap into the popularity of video, currently the hottest medium on social networks.

Today, GoFundMe is debuting a new operation called GoFundMe Studios, which will make films both as short movies and clips, based on select campaigns on the platform.

The studio will be led by two people: Wil Tidman, who had been the VP of creative, strategy and original productions for GoPro — the camera maker that once had high hopes of its own move into content before shutting down its entertainment unit in 2016 amid many other cuts (but didn’t exit content altogether: Tidman was actually in his role there until May 2017); and Chris Neil, who has a long list of production credits in Hollywood films to his name.

The studio is releasing its first film today, a nine-minute short called “Jim Ford, Repo Man” (embedded below), and there are several other films already in production. They sound pretty compelling, I have to admit, above and beyond the donation aspect, which speaks a lot to the emotive nature of GoFundMe (and, perhaps, what makes the content world go round these days).

Others in production include a film about a reformed Klansman; a film about bulls that escape from a slaughterhouse.

“In my career, I have yet to come across so many truly incredible stories as the ones we’ve found on GoFundMe,” said Tidman in a statement. “GoFundMe Studios will showcase the extraordinary stories of humans changing the world through the simple act of giving. Through a documentary storytelling lens, we aim to inspire our community and the world to turn compassion into action.”

“Now is the time for these stories,” added Neil. “With so much tragic news these days, people are hungry for artfully told, real-life stories that remind us of the transformative power of kindness and compassion.”

The idea behind the new division, according to Raquel Rozas, CMO of GoFundMe, is (fittingly) one of marketing: it will be used both to spread the word about interesting campaigns, to get more people to contribute; and by association, spreading the word about GoFundMe as a place to start fundraising for a cause.

“Wil and his team will be working with different formats, from one to two-minute short moments to more in-depth docu-series in order to bring these stories to life,” she said in an emailed interview. She said GoFundMe is  aiming to release at least one film a month and a shorter “moment” every week.

“We will share these with a wide audience over our social channels, and we  are also talking with networks and digital platforms who are interested in helping our community by amplifying these stories,” she added.

It is not — at this point — a mission to replace all the video on GoFundMe with video natively created by or on GoFundMe’s platforms.

The in-house studio is an interesting twist on the concept of native content — which today has largely become a term that is equated with advertising. As with the rest of GoFundMe, while this is a kind of advertising of its own as well, it’s in aid of the cause itself.

For now, GoFundMe is hand-selecting the causes that it will choose to profile in video form — one example of which you can see below.

It’s early days but you can see how this might develop over time. Video, potentially, could be an interesting and extra line of revenue for the company, if they decided to make this into a service.

Today, those making campaigns can create and upload their own videos, and many do, often using other platforms like YouTube, so there is clearly an appetite for using video to build stories, and this is GoFundMe’s way of tapping into that and potentially getting involved in that part of the process.

Rozas declined to comment on any plans, if they exist, to open up the service to any and all campaign creators as a paid or free service, nor would she say anything about whether GoFundMe planned to and add in any other features to those videos, such as the ability to, say, donate directly during the videos themselves — both features that would make sense in GoFundMe videos.

“Right now we are focused on launching GoFundMe studios and sharing these powerful stories,” she said, “but we are always looking for ways to help amplify more stories, and bring more features and tools to our community to make helping even easier.”

To date, GoFundMe has not disclosed the total amount it has raised in venture funding, nor its valuation. The company counts Accel, Iconiq, TCV, Stripes and more among its investors. The company typically charges 7.9 percent + $.30 processing fee for personal or charity campaigns and competes against the likes of Facebook (which natively hosts much of the video posted on its site), JustGiving and more.

Defeated Gambian President, Yahya Jammeh, has called the newly elected President of the small West African country, Adama Barrow, to concede defeat.

There had been reports before the declaration of results on Friday, that Mr. Jammeh had recorded a concession video.

The man, who had led Gambia with what many describe as iron fist, promised to offer his guidance to Mr. Barrow 51, through the transition process.

He said he respects the will of the Gambian people, and that he was grateful to them and to the Almighty Allah for the opportunity to lead his people.

“I am calling you to wish you all the best. The Gambian people have spoken and I have no reason to contest the will of the Almighty Allah. I wish you all the best. The country will be in your hands in January and you are assured of my guidance on your transition. You are the elected President of The Gambia and I wish you all the best. I have no ill-will, and I wish you all the best. This is transparent, this is the will of Allah and as a Muslim I accept it in good faith; the Ugandan people have chosen you.”

My time is up – Jammeh

Mr. Jammeh in a rather hearty conversation, shared some jokes with the new President, and said he believed that his time was up. He revealed that he was going into farming in his home village in The Gambia.

“After 22 years, I am grateful to the Almighty Allah for that. I remember I came on Friday 22nd of July, and I lost on Friday the 2nd of December; Allah is telling me that my time is up and I hand over graciously with gratitude to The Gambian people and gratitude to the Almighty Allah to you.”

Mr. Barrow in response also said he was also born on Friday, specifically 15th February, 1965, and he interestingly won the elections on a Friday. He thanked Mr. Jammeh for calling to concede defeat to him.

The Head of The Gambia’s Electoral Commission declared Adama Barrow as the winner of the 2016 presidential election, with 263,515 votes to Yahya Jammeh’s 212,099 votes.

Adama Barrow - The new Gambian President.
Adama Barrow – The new Gambian President.

The third candidate, Mamma Kande, polled 102,969 votes.

The Electoral Commissioner of Gambia, Chief Alieu Momar Njie, said it was unprecedented for a Gambian head of state to accept defeat before the final results

Mr. Barrow led a coalition of seven opposition parties to end the tyrannical rule of Mr. Jammeh who has been accused of suppressing freedoms, jailing political opponents and critics of his government, and in some cases killing such persons.

On Election Day, he shut down the internet blocking social media, blocked international phone calls and stopped many observers from observing the process.

Mr Jammeh had been in power for 22 years, after taking power in in a coup in 1994. The West African country has not had a smooth transfer of power since independence in 1965.

He had been trailing Mr. Barrow in partial results and was defeated in the capital, Banjul, his stronghold.

Watch Yahya Jammeh’s concession video below:

The Gambia is bounded by Senegal, with a narrow Atlantic coastline.

It is known for its diverse ecosystems around the central Gambia River.

Abundant wildlife in its Kiang West National Park and Bao Bolong Wetland Reserve includes monkeys, leopards, hippos, hyenas and rare birds.

The capital, Banjul, and nearby Serrekunda offer access to beaches.

The country’s populatiion as at 2013 according to World Bank figures, was 1.8 million.

Facebook has overestimated how much video people have watched for the last two years, the firm has admitted.

One advertiser suggested that, in some cases, video viewing statistics had been overestimated by up to 80%.

Facebook’s analytics are an important tool for advertisers, who use them to work out how much of their video content is being watched.

The social network said the error had been fixed and had not changed how much advertisers paid the site.

‘Unacceptable’ behaviour

The error affected a Facebook metric called “average duration of video viewed”, which was supposed to tell publishers for how long, on average, people had watched a video.

However, the metric did not include viewers who had watched for less than three seconds in the count.

Discounting the shorter views – including people who had ignored a video in their news feed – inflated the average viewing times for each video.

In a statement, Facebook said: “We recently discovered an error in the way we calculate one of our video metrics.

“This error has been fixed, it did not impact billing, and we have notified our partners both through our product dashboards and via sales and publisher outreach,” it added.

The video-watching metric has now been renamed to more accurately reflect what it measures, the company said.

The metric is now called “average watch time” and Facebook started using this to gather statistics on video consumption late last month.

The statement also said the video-viewing metric was one among many that ad firms use to work out if their content is being watched.

The Wall Street Journal quoted ad-buying firm Publicis as saying that Facebook’s misreporting was “unacceptable”.

Publicis said it showed the need for third-party verification of statistics gathered by Facebook.

The social network has previously been criticised for counting a video as being “viewed” after three seconds.

Thousands of pictures including “naked selfies” have been extracted from factory-wiped phones by a Czech Republic-based security firm.

The firm, called Avast, used publicly available forensic security tools to extract the images from second-hand phones bought on eBay.

Other data extracted included emails, text messages and Google searches.

Experts have warned that the only way to completely delete data is to “destroy your phone”.

Most smartphones come with a “factory reset” option, which is designed to wipe and reset the device, returning it to its original system state.

However, Avast has discovered that some older smartphones only erase the indexing of the data and not the data itself, which means pictures, emails and text messages can be recovered relatively easily by using standard forensic tools that anyone can buy and download.

The company claims that of 40,000 stored photos extracted from 20 phones purchased from eBay, more than 750 were of women in various stages of undress, along with 250 selfies of “what appears to be the previous owner’s manhood”.

There was an additional 1,500 family photos of children, 1,000 Google searches, 750 emails and text messages and 250 contact names and email addresses.

The company said: “Deleting files from your Android phone before selling it or giving it away is not enough. You need to overwrite your files, making them irretrievable.”

It was not made clear by Avast whether they extracted data from all 20 phones.

Destroy the phone

Google responded that Avast used outdated smartphones and that their research did not “reflect the security protections in Android versions that are used by the vast majority of users”.

It was recommended by Google that all users enable encryption on their devices before applying a factory reset to ensure files cannot be accessed.

This feature, said Google, has been available for three years, although it is not enabled by default, which could leave less tech-savvy users open to attack.

Apple has had built-in encryption for its hardware and firmware since the release of the iPhone 3GS.

The hardware encryption is permanently enabled and users cannot turn it off.

Additional file data protection is available, but must be turned on in the settings menu.

Independent computer security analyst Graham Cluley said that if a user is serious about privacy and security they should make sure their device is always “protected with a PIN or passphrase, and that the data on it is encrypted”.

However, Alan Calder, founder of cybersecurity and risk management firm IT Governance, told the BBC that erasing data, even after it has been encrypted, will not be enough to completely protect your device.

“Google’s recommended routine for protecting the data only makes it harder for someone to recover the data – it does not make it impossible,” he said.

“If you don’t want your data recovered, destroy the phone – and that has been standard security advice, in relation to telephones and computer drives, for a number of years. Any other ‘solution’ simply postpones the point at which someone is able to access your confidential data.”
