All 10 regional chairmen of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have asked former president John Mahama to embark on a ‘Thank you tour’ to appreciate party loyalists for their support during the December 2016 polls.

They believe the tour, although belated, will help in the party’s reconciliatory and healing process.

[contextly_sidebar id=”JxPc9NL5bGtbxpLKW4bN1wjPsC7QPBia”]Following the NDC’s defeat in the December 2016, there appear to be pockets of disgruntled members divided over who was responsible for the party’s defeat.

The National leadership of the party tasked a special Committee led by Prof. Kwesi Botchwey to tour the country to listen to concerns of party members after it was evident the many of the party’s supporters were not happy with the results of the election.

The party has also undertaken 3 Unity Walks in Accra, Tamale and Cape Coast as part of the healing process.

The 10 regional chairmen of the party, under whose leadership the party suffered the electoral defeat believe the former President’s “thank you tour” will help in such efforts to ensure peace and unity within the party ahead of the 2020 polls.

Regional chairman back Mahama for 2020

After a meeting with the former President on Thursday, the chairmen urged John Mahama to consider calls for him to contest the party’s primaries and represent it as flagbearer in the 2020 general elections.

In its communiqué after the meeting, it said, “At a meeting held today, Thursday November 09, 2017, in Cantonments, Accra with HE John Dramani Mahama, former President of the Republic of Ghana, we the ten (10) regional chairpersons of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have:

  1. Invited the former President to, as a matter of urgency, embark on the delayed and much-awaited ‘Thank You Tour’ to thank supporters of the NDC for supporting him through his tenure and the party over the years;
  1. Called on HE John Dramani Mahama to consider the request of teeming supporters of the NDC and Ghanaians to lead the party to the 2020 General Elections.”

The 10 Chairmen so signed the communique are; Mr Kobina Ade-Coker, Greater Accra; Mr Micheal Aidoo, Western; Alhaji Mumuni Bolnaba, Upper East; Mr John K. Gyapong, Volta; Mr Opoku Atuahene, Brong Ahafo; and Mr Matthew Song-Aabo, Upper West; Mr Bismark Tawiah Boateng, Eastern; and Mr Yaw Obimpeh, Ashanti.

The others are Alhaji Sofo Azorka, Northern and Mr Allotey Jacobs of the Central Region.

Former President John Mahama has consoled members of his party –the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over their humiliating defeat in the 2016 general elections.

According to him, it was good the party lost so Ghanaians could “feel the deceptive nature of the…NPP.”

“It is not for nothing that God asked us to step aside, if God hadn’t let us step aside, Ghanaians would have not appreciated anything that we do because they would say if Nana Akufo-Addo had won, he would have reduced fuel prices, he would have provided employment for everyone, he would have reduced utility tariff,” Mahama said when he addressed teeming members of the NDC at Tamale in the Northern Region during the party’s unity walk session on Saturday.

Stop propaganda and work – Mahama advises Nana Addo

[contextly_sidebar id=”zucuFA1Zb93b26R3YfKHdqz0fMFGd1fb”]He also charged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to move beyond propaganda and work to assuage the plight of the suffering masses who voted for him.

John Mahama said Akufo-Addo has no excuse than to implement the juicy campaign promises that won him power at the last elections.

“No amount of propaganda can make the people oblivious of their own responsibilities because they are living with the prevailing circumstances,” he said.

Let’s unite

He also called on the NDC to unite in a bid to snatch back power from the NPP in the 2020 election.

He said the NDC cannot win the next general elections with a divided front for which reason party loyalists and leadership should bury their differences and unite for a common good.

Members of a pro-National Democratic Congress (NDC) group, Action Movement, are livid over a supposed unity walk being organized by former President John Mahama.

John Mahama is kick starting his regional unity walk in Tamale in the Northern Region on Saturday.

[contextly_sidebar id=”x1MxMGx8oQfqehL72dzO31roVGRipfsc”]“I’ll be participating in a unity walk in my home region tomorrow [Saturday]. Tamale alone can draw out millions of people to fill the streets of the whole city…we have enough people to ensure that we have a successful walk. My understanding is that the walk will be repeated in other regions,” Mahama hinted while speaking at a lecture to open the NDC’s National Institute of Social Democracy on Friday.

But the group argued that the exercise is an indirect way of activating Mahama’s bid to lead the NDC in the 2020 election, after he suffered a humiliating defeat in the 2016 election.

Action movement in a statement said “Mr. Mahama and his supporters must be told that at this juncture [that], what the NDC needs is not a unity walk. We need serious introspection and a new way of doing things.”

The NDC group insists that Mahama has no right to organize a unity walk because the party’s Election Review Committee recommended a healing process for their members to be led by the NDC’s Council of Elders and not John Mahama.

“The Kwesi Botwey fact finding committee report actually recommended a healing tour under the auspices of the council of elders. And as much as we are concerned, the council of elders has initiated the process. Mahama is a member of the council of elders and we expect him to know better,” the group added in the statement signed by its convener, Kodzo Hamenya Keglo.

Below is the full statement from the Action Movement:

Mahama’s Tamale ‘Unity Walk’ cause for concern – Action Movement

The action movement of the NDC has become aware of a purported poster in circulation, urging party faithfuls to walk with ex-president Mahama in the northern regional capital-Tamale on Saturday 9th September 2017. Much as we cannot fault Mr.  Mahama for kick starting his campaign for 2020 flagbearership elections though leaving the numerous corruption allegations unanswered, we would like to put on record that this so-called Unity walk is all an attempt by Mahama to test his popularity ahead of the forthcoming flagbearership contest.

Mahama as the former leader of the party has no mandate to organize a Unity walk. The Kwesi Botwey fact finding committee report actually recommended a healing tour under the auspices of the council of elders. And as much as we are concerned, the council of elders has initiated the process. Mahama is a member of the council of elders and we expect him to know better.

In any case, who are those Mahama want to unite with in this walk? Prior to the 2016 elections we were made to believe that the party was so united. Mahama and his cohorts even made it thematic subject of their campaign, saying Nana Akufo-Addo is a divisive leader and intolerant leader, and that the NDC was united before the elections. So what is Mahama uniting? Mahama and his hangers-on should understand that he lost and lost convincingly. He did all he could but still lost in a humiliating fashion. His loss had nothing to do with unity, but everything to do with the corruption and abuse of office.

If Mahama has any genuine plan for unity, he should assembly the old guards and the all disaffected party activists for a true party reorganization. We are not falling for this cosmetic approach meant to throw dust into the eyes of the unsuspecting public.  We are calling on all NDC members to boycott Mahama and his so-called unity walk. It is the same shameful approach and walks that brought us here in the first place. Maham must be humble enough to follow the plans of the council of elders (The Healing tour)

Mr Mahama and his supporters must be told that at this juncture, what the NDC needs is not a unity walk. We need serious introspection and a new way of doing things.

We can organize thousand UNITY WALKS but we will remain divided if we don’t change our mindset. We need a mental and psychological unity walks devoid of Mahama’s pretence and hypocrisy. Only then will real UNITY can genuinely manifest through the blood vessels of our great party.

As a former leader, he needs to respect the structures of the party and act within the confines of the structures. There are other potential leaders interested in running for office but they are patiently waiting for the party leadership to set the ball rolling before they get down to work.

If the party leadership had any backbone, Mr. Mahama should have been sanctioned by now. This is how democracy dies. No individual is bigger than the party. Every party person who believes in our constitution needs to stand up to Mahama.

This must not be allowed to continue.

Lionel Messi’s masterclass dumped Manchester City out of the Champions League as the Premier League failed to provide a team in the last eight for the second time in three seasons.

Already leading 2-1 from the first leg of the last-16 tie, Barca tore through City as Neymar hit the post early on.
Messi set up Ivan Rakitic, who lobbed Joe Hart for a first-half goal.

City then needed two goals to take it to extra-time but Sergio Aguero’s penalty was saved after he was fouled.
Although that golden opportunity in the 78th minute would have ensured a tense finale at the Nou Camp, it would also have put an unfair slant on the game, which Barca dominated for long periods.

The four-time champions registered 23 attempts toward the City goal but found keeper Hart in superb form as he almost took on a personal duel with Messi and kept the Argentine, and his team-mates, at bay.

City have now failed to reach the quarter-finals in each of their four Champions League campaigns.
As the best paid team in world sport, according to a recent study , it seems like a poor return on that investment.

With a fourth defeat in their last five games, there is also a genuine threat that their season could end up trophy-less. Manuel Pellegrini’s side sit six points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea, who have a game in hand.

Sergio Aguero missed a penalty after being brought down by Gerard Pique

The former Villarreal boss admitted this week that he did not feel under pressure despite speculation that he could be sacked at the end of the season.

But after a wonderful exhibition of cute passing and mesmerising dribbling from Messi, there was little either Pellegrini or his team could do to stop the 27-year-old.

From the beginning, he was a menace, whether exchanging one-twos with Andres Iniesta or curling free-kicks with the type of spin a baseball pitcher would have been proud of.

The only thing missing from Messi’s superlative display was a goal.
But after Neymar had hit the post early on after Vincent Kompany was dispossessed on the edge of his own box, Messi turned provider when he found Rakitic with a crossfield pass following a quick counter-attack.

In City’s only notable chance of the first half, James Milner failed to touch in Yaya Toure’s low cross.
Luis Suarez, who scored twice in the first leg, hit the post before the break and there was no let-up after the interval.

Fortunately for City, Hart had a superb night and made 10 saves overall, a record for an English goalkeeper in the Champions League.

As the game entered its last half hour, the visitors did threaten the Barca goal and they were prepared to leave gaps at the back in doing so.

Their chance to change the tie’s complexion was wasted, though, after Aguero was tripped in the penalty area by Gerard Pique.
City’s top scorer stepped up to take the kick himself but Marc-Andre ter Stegen easily saved to his right.

Jerome Boateng’s deflected late strike against his former side was enough for Bayern Munich to see off Manchester City with a 1-0 win at the Allianz Arena in their Champions League opener.

The hosts had the better chances of the opening 45 minutes as both Thomas Muller and Robert Lewandowski hit the side-netting after rounding Joe Hart, who was in inspired form to keep both Muller and Mario Gotze at bay.

Hart denied Gotze again in a much more subdued second period, while David Silva threatened for City, but Boateng, who left Eastlands after a year with the club in 2011, struck with one minute remaining on the clock via Gotze’s back to secure the three points.

Bayern were without Franck Ribery for the Group E opener but Pep Guardiola’s three-pronged attack still boasted plenty of goal threat with Lewandowski leading the line, while Arjen Robben returned to the bench following a knee injury.

Manuel Pellegrini, who was serving the final game of his touchline ban, opted to start Edin Dzeko ahead of Sergio Aguero up front in the most eye-catching of his four changes from Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Arsenal.

It was Guardiola’s men who began the liveliest and within 40 seconds of kick-off, one side of the ground thought Bayern had taken the lead as Muller rounded Hart after racing through on goal, only to find the side-netting as he lost his footing.

The German felt Hart had tripped him as he looked to apply the finish but Spanish referee Alberto Undiano Mallenco waved away the protests in an early warning for City assistant Ruben Cousillas.

City were seeing more of the ball than they might have expected in the opening stages, though, and Dzeko forced Manuel Neuer into a smart low stop at his near post after being threaded into an acute angle by Silva.

It was a fairly open start to proceedings and Joe Hart was called upon for the first time after 18 minutes with a superb one-handed save to deny Muller’s goal-bound header, before Boateng sliced over from the resulting corner.

Hart was busy again two minutes later to beat away Gotze’s deflected effort, while Dzeko curled a wicked left-footer inches wide of Neuer’s post at the opposite end after a swift City break up-field.

After two half chances in quick succession for Dzeko, David Alaba looked to up the ante in Bayern’s favour, lashing wide from range before Hart pushed away his half-volley after the ball had fallen kindly on the edge of the City box.

The hosts were beginning to find their rhythm and Lewandowski threatened for the first time on 35 minutes in a similar chance to Muller’s early miss, rounding Hart but hitting the side-netting after Alaba’s through ball.

Bacary Sagna, who came into the side for the suspended Pablo Zabaleta, then saw a near-post header pushed away by Neuer from Samir Nasri’s corner as the game remained goalless at half-time.

Five minutes after the restart, Philipp Lahm dragged a low strike wide after being invited to shoot from range before Hart clutched onto the ball after Vincent Kompany’s block had taken the sting out of Gotze’s shot.

City were prompted into their first change on 57 minutes as the match-winner in this fixture last year, James Milner, replaced the largely ineffectual Nasri.

Bayern had started the second half the brighter of the two and there was a nervy moment for Hart as he misjudged the flight of Rafinha’s cross from the right, but the England keeper managed to recover in time to push away the danger from Mehdi Benatia’s return ball.

City looked at their most dangerous on the counter-attack and an incisive move into the Bayern half culminated with Silva launching himself at a right-wing cross from Navas that he was just unable to direct on target.

That chance triggered a brief spell of possession inside the Bayern half for the visitors but Martin Demichelis was still needed to stand firm to block and then hook away Bernat’s inviting low cross from the left.

Hart then spilled a speculative strike from Rafinha but managed to react in time to block Muller’s rebound from close-range, although the linesman’s raised flag would have spared his blushes.

Dzeko made way for Aguero on 73 minutes, while Robben replaced Muller soon after for the hosts. The Dutchman was soon in the thick of things as his penalty appeals were dismissed after going to ground under the close watch of Fernandinho.

Silva then felt he was fouled inside the area at the other end after a clumsy challenge from Benatia.

Bayern were pressing for a late winner as Hart produced another stunning stop to push away Boateng’s long-range strike before the former City man finally broke the deadlock with one minute on the clock as he lashed home a half-volley from the resulting corner.

Replays later showed the strike to have taken a slight deflection on its way off the back of Gotze, but the former City defender was quick to claim a rare goal.

Substitute David Pizarro smashed into Hart’s side-netting moments later, while Aguero poked wide the game’s final chance after a gut-wrenching finale for the Premier League side.

Martin Demichelis headed a late equaliser as Manchester City drew 2-2 with likely title rivals Arsenal in a pulsating encounter at the Emirates Stadium.

City had taken a first-half lead through Sergio Aguero, only for Arsenal to respond with fine goals from Jack Wilshere and Alexis Sanchez before veteran defender Demichelis earned the Premier League champions a point.

Danny Welbeck was presented with an early chance to vindicate his selection as Arsenal’s main striker when he seized on David Silva’s poor pass, but the deadline day signing’s dink over Joe Hart came back off the post.

Arsenal were in the ascendancy in the first half, but were rocked on their heels on 28 minutes when City broke with pace and Jesus Navas’ excellent low ball into the box was cleverly finished by Aguero.

_77567963_023880532

The home side levelled on 63 minutes when Aaron Ramsey played in Wilshere, who skipped past former team-mate Gael Clichy before lifting a delightful shot over Joe Hart into the net.

Wilshere turned provider for Arsenal to take the lead on 74 minutes when he headed the ball back into the box after City could only partially clear and Alexis steered a firm volley beyond Hart.

England midfielder Wilshere appeared fortunate not to concede a penalty for handball and, after Mathieu Debuchy was stretchered off, City struck back with seven minutes to go.

Substitute Aleksandar Kolarov curled out a corner and Demichelis rose unmarked to head beyond Wojciech Szczesny, who appeared to touch the ball away from the covering Mathieu Flamini.

Welbeck whipped an effort narrowly wide in his last act before being substituted due to injury, Kolarov thundered a shot against the post, Laurent Koscielny’s clearance hit Edin Dzeko before bouncing back off the upright and former Arsenal midfielder Samir Nasri saw a goal disallowed for offside as six minutes of added time failed to yield a winner.

Frank Lampard made his City debut after Yaya Toure played for the Ivory Coast in midweek but he lasted only until half-time, with a foul on Ramsey that earned a yellow card his headline moment.

Ramsey started in Arsenal’s midfield after recovering from an ankle injury, but all eyes were on Welbeck’s first appearance for the Gunners.

His first touch was greeted with a roar of approval from home fans and expectation continued to grip the Emirates Stadium as Alexis tested Hart from long range.

Somehow Aguero threaded a path between three defenders, but the angle was too tight to produce a meaningful shot and Arsenal immediately renewed their offensive.

Welbeck failed to connect with Mesut Ozil’s delicate pass and moments later the England forward had a glorious chance to put Arsenal ahead after intercepting Silva’s ill-judged back pass. Only Hart stood between Welbeck and a debut goal but his attempted chip drifted on to the left post.

Arsenal had bristled with intent in a superb start, but City’s ability to threaten on the counter was highlighted when Navas broke clear and forced a key clearance from Per Mertesacker.

Moments after Alexis had almost ghosted through City’s defence, the champions struck a clinical opening goal after a 50-50 clearance in midfield looped over to an unmarked Navas on the right wing.

The Spaniard set off and delayed his pass perfectly for the arriving Aguero to slide his shot past Szczesny.

Szczesny then had to prod clear a shot by Silva after Pablo Zabaleta exploited Arsenal’s left flank – and particularly outclassed full-back Nacho Monreal – once again.

Aguero’s goal had clearly deflated the Gunners and it was not until the opening exchanges of the second half that they threatened again – only for Zabaleta to prevent Welbeck from reaching Alexis’ cross.

Just as Arsenal appeared to be fading once more, they struck a 63rd-minute equaliser through Wilshere.

Aguero lost the ball in midfield and Alexis pounced, threading a pass to Ramsey who found Wilshere. The England international still had work to do, but he expertly rounded Clichy with a wonderful touch before lofting the ball over Hart.

And 11 minutes later Wilshere was involved as Arsenal surged ahead through Alexis, who volleyed his team-mate’s header into the net after a failed clearance from Vincent Kompany.

Demichelis capitalised on poor defending to plunder City’s equaliser and Arsenal were relieved to see the flag go up after their former player Nasri stabbed the ball into the net in stoppage time.

Manchester City are set to sign former Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard on loan from New York City FC.

Lampard was released by Chelsea this summer after 13 years at Stamford Bridge, his 211 goals in 649 matches making him the club’s record scorer.

The 36-year-old signed for New York City last month on a two-year contract.

The Major League Soccer franchise is owned by Manchester City and baseball giants New York Yankees, but the team’s season does not start until March 2015.

Manchester City declined to comment, but Lampard could be at their Carrington training ground as early as next week for manager Manuel Pellegrini to monitor his fitness.

The loan deal is likely to run until mid-January, and City plan to register the England international for both their Premier League and Champions League campaigns.

Manchester City won their second Premier League title in three years last season, with Chelsea finishing third.

The two sides meet at Etihad Stadium on 21 September.

During his time at Stamford Bridge, Lampard was Chelsea’s vice-captain and won the Premier League title three times and the Champions League and Europa League once apiece.

The former West Ham player also helped the Blues win four FA Cups and the League Cup twice.

On signing for New York City FC, Lampard said: “New York ticks all the right boxes for me. It’s very exciting.”

Former Spain striker David Villa, 32, has also joined the MLS franchise, though he will spend three months on loan at Melbourne FC, Manchester City’s Australian partner club.

Manchester City chief executive Ferran Soriano said: “One of the reasons David Villa and Frank Lampard decided to come to New York is because they know who manages and who owns the club.”

Lampard, who won his 106th England cap during the World Cup in Brazil, said he would make a decision on his international career once his club future was finalised.

Frank Lampard’s career honours

Champions League win 2011-12
Europa League win 2012-13

At his official New York unveiling, Lampard said: “I’m going to keep fit, that’s the main thing. How I do that is not clear yet.

“I’m going to sit round with people at the club and sort that out.”

A number of MLS players have spent the US close-season on loan to Premier League clubs, including Clint Dempsey at Fulham, Landon Donovan at Everton, Robbie Keane at Aston Villa and Thierry Henry at Arsenal.

James Milner says the number of minutes he gets at Manchester City will determine whether he signs a new contract.

The England international has entered the final 12 months of his current deal at the Etihad Stadium.

Four years at City have delivered two Premier League titles and successes in FA Cup and League Cup competition.

Milner admits his preference would be to remain with the reigning English champions and compete for more major honours, but he has warned that he needs to be playing in order to commit.

The versatile 28-year-old said: “Basically, I want to be here – as long as I’m playing.

“I love it here and hopefully I can be here for a long time to come. But that’s determined on how much football I get. I just want to feel like I’m contributing.

“I played a fair amount last year – maybe not as many in the league as I would have liked – but I felt like I contributed to the trophies I won. That’s what it’s about.

“If you win trophies and you haven’t played as much as you wanted, it can be frustrating. But that wasn’t the case last year and hopefully it won’t be this either.

“I played in important games at the end of last season, it was pleasing to help them win trophies.

“That’s what it’s all about, I want as many minutes as I can. Competition is tough, but when you get out there, you have to go and help the team.

“I’ve been here four years now. There’s big-money signings every year. You want to play against the top teams, play with the best players in the world.

“We definitely have that at City. You test yourself every single day in training.”

Retaining the Premier League crown is a top priority for Milner and City this season, but he acknowledges that the chase is likely to be closer than ever – with all of the title hopefuls having strengthened over the summer.

Milner added: “It’ll be tight, it was very competitive last year.

“I would have thought it would be close. It’s down to us to go out there and show we are the best, I suppose.”

Ivoirian superstar Yays Toure has put the events of his dire summer behind him as he eyes more glory with his club Manchester City in the new season.

The summer started with the reigning African player of the year accusing City of disrespecting him on his birthday. He later slammed the club for allegedly denying him time to be with his sick brother Ibrahim who eventually died of cancer.

His agent Dimitry Seluk had threatened that the influential midfielder would leave the club after claiming the English champions treated him like ‘a nobody’ during his birthday at a title celebration attended by Arab owner Sheikh Mansour.

Things did not get any better for the 31-year-old at international level as the Elephants were knocked out in the group stage of the World Cup.

But speaking on the club’s pre-season tour of America, Toure said all that was now behind him and he wants to stay at City and aim for more glory in the new campaign.

“It was not a case of me wanting to leave the club. I stayed quiet and at the end of the day it’s my decision. I will stay at Manchester City for as long as possible,” Yaya said.

“The matter is closed now. The most important thing was to try to focus again. Now I’m very happy to join the team and the manager. Everyone is very positive.

Yaya and brother Kolo play through pain at the World Cup after the death of Ibrahim.

“This year is going to be fantastic. We’ve got some fantastic players coming in and important players are staying. If you want to be the best you need to win every trophy possible, and the Champions League is a target this year.”

He added: “We know we are the team to beat. This year will be amazing because I’m expecting something – I’m expecting trophies this year.”

Most difficult for Yaya has been the pain of losing a loved brother, but he insists he and his family must now try and move on.

“He has been sick for two years,” he said. “But he knew I loved football and he was telling me, ‘go to the World Cup and enjoy it. If you stay with me and don’t participate in the World Cup I would not be happy. I would love to see you doing your best and trying to help the country’.

“He loved football. When he was sick in Manchester he was watching every game I was playing in. After them I was coming to see him in hospital.

“With the loss of my brother it was quite hard. I’m a Muslim, I believe in God. Sometimes you can have everything, but this was a difficult situation.

“Unfortunately it was a difficult summer for my family. When you lose a brother it is always difficult and he was young too. We were very sad, all the family. We need to move on and pray for him.”

Liverpool beat Premier League rivals Manchester City in a pre-season friendly at Yankee Stadium, coming from behind twice to draw 2-2 in normal time before winning a penalty shoot-out 3-1.

Stevan Jovetic bagged a brace for Premier League champions Manchester City but Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling replied for Liverpool, who finished second last season.

Simon Mignolet then pulled off a pair of saves in the shoot-out to give the Reds victory in front of a crowd of 49,653.

The win put Liverpool on top of Group B in the International Champions Cup and they move on to play AC Milan on Saturday, with the possibility of a final against Manchester United to follow.

The Yankee Stadium spectators were served up an entertaining encounter between the top two teams in England last season and City new boy Willy Caballero produced a great save in the first half to keep out a close-range Rickie Lambert header.

At the other end, Brad Jones saved a low Jesus Navas effort and Edin Dzeko had a goal ruled out for offside.

Manchester City took the lead in the 53rd minute when the lively Navas made progress down the right and sent over a low cross which Jovetic converted at the near post, after Steven Gerrard was unable to clear.

But Liverpool responded just six minutes later, Henderson conjuring up a delightful curling finish after the ball ran loose when Sterling tried to find Daniel Sturridge.

Jovetic (67) quickly restored City’s lead, poking the ball past Mignoelet after a deflected shot fell perfectly for him.

However, Liverpool pressed strongly in the closing stages and, with just five minutes left to play, Lucas cleverly set up Sterling with a cushioned pass and the England man’s excellent finish set up spot-kicks.

City were far from clinical with their penalties, Aleksandar Kolarov punting their first over the bar, although he was reprieved when Sturridge did likewise.

But Mignolet then saved well from Yaya Toure and Navas, while Emre Can and Henderson converted.

City finally found the net when youngster Kelechi Iheanacho stepped up but Lucas then sent Joe Hart the wrong way to win it for Liverpool.
